Can artificial intelligences suffer from mental illness?

    Since 'life' itself does not have a soul there is nothing there for AI not to have.

    Again, to me, it appears there seems to be confusion where soul is taken to be a ingredient ie the body has everything assembled and just need to insert a soul for it to be up and running.

    Example the electronic Lego is all together add the soul / battery to get it running.

    Life is a process no soul (battery) needed.

    Example a bottle of softdrink can exist alongside tubes of mints no problem.

    Add the mints to the bottle of softdrink and be ready for a reaction process.

    Hint do it outside and do not screw the cap back on bottle.

    Humpty Dumpty never drinks softdrink and follows with mints. No no.
    Poe only has enough for one or the other.

    No, my reason leans more towards that if I have the power to create and destroy something, then that something...doesn't have any ability to choose. It can only be programmed with a set number of reactions, functions, etc. It can be said that humans have a finite number of reactions and functions as well, but we have the ability to choose. That ability to choose is what separates life from machines. All life, really but human life is more complex. AI can only at best, appear to have some of the qualities that humans do, based on its programming. Until we learn more, that would be how I see things for now.

    I believe we will forever be without artificial intelligence. I have tried every possible calculation:

    +=1 *=2 -=3 /=4 ==5

    1*2*3*4*5=120

    One-hundred-and-twenty possible combinations. Not one has produced a successful calculation of intelligence. The theory will remain FOREVER!

    Relates to the percentage of spices and the cooking temperature for the chicken.

    Only later it was found to explain the Big Bang and the coefficient of the space time continueum.

    As we post scientist are punching the formula in CERN.

    If you willing to pay for your airfare to Switzerland you can go with Poe and visit the CERN KFC and get the information from a life sized Albert Einstein hologram.

    You need to visit KFC when CERN in not operating as the restaurant gets sucked flat from the powerful magnets of CERN during operation.

    You may also be able to take a walking tour inside CERN during its downtime.

    Follow the path the celebrated photons took on their way to discovering gods particle.

    Stand at the very spot where the epic collision took place.

    Humpty Dumpty wants Poe to bring him back a chicken leg fridge magnet from CERN.

    Most modern AI development does not rely on programming in the reactions, functions, etc. They emerge, proliferate, and elaborate, over time, as the machine learns.

    The machine that just beat the professional 9-Dan Go player was employing reactions, functions, etc, unknown to its programmers. It had developed them by playing millions of games of Go with itself.

    Due to the complexity... all the machine reactions cant be known by its programmers... but the reactions the machine employed are due to the programmin it received... an the complexity of human reactions are so much more complex than current AI... that most people cant even emagine that ther reactions (choices) are due to cause an effect.!!!

    I sort of agree with you.

    Yes the reactions from AI are governed by the bootstrap program installed by humans.

    We are born with a working software built in which allows us to begin life by the bootstrap method.

    Much of the body remains on auto pilot.

    During life gazillions of bits of data flood into the body to be processed by the brain.

    Much of the data is also processed automatically.

    Brain processing departs from current AI at the input stage.

    The data coming in allows the body to make current decisions based on the perceived data.

    The data, perceived and non perceived, also flows automatically and is linked into the vast amounts of storage data already in the brain.

    This is where the magic happens.

    It appears that in the flowing maelstrom of whirling thoughts connections are made leading to new ideas which are a puzzlement as to their origin.

    Thats the system which needs to be duplicated.

    AI with vast amounts of data zapping around at random making valid usable connections (ideas) which can be put to practical use by us puny humans.

    Currently we only have puny humans.

    Problem with puny humans there is so much junk within the data in the brain (GIGO) humans cannot decide if the junk may contain a nugget of helpful data do all the junk goes into the maelstrom.

    Humpty Dumpty wants a nugget.
    Poe is a nugget.

    Modern AI includes self-programming by the machine.
    Most of the people who attempt to reduce human choice to cause and effect have failed to make their conception of "cause" and "effect" complex enough to handle the operations of the human mind - (or other matters of the physical world either, often). Some kind of billiard ball model, colliding objects and forces, is usually at the root of the problem.

    The patterns of thought are causal, in the human mind. In dreams begin responsibilities is probably a plain fact of the real world - either that, or it's false, of course. Always a possibility. But in no sense are responsibilities produced by neurons. The physical brain is merely substrate - and substrate does not cause pattern.

    But the Mirror Neuron System of the brain does recognize patterns.

    This is why we can agree on gross reality, but with a range of emotional responses. It is the seat of Empathy, the ability to understand and recognize patterns in nature. Patterns are mathematical constructs.

    Of course. But keep in mind that some of that programming is due to what it experienced. So no two advanced AI's will be alike - because they all experienced different things.

    I agree, a human brain is only programmed (a hardwired neuron system) which allows us to learn and recognize patterns. From the moment it is born it begins to gather information, which shapes its understanding of reality. Currently, a person is not fully qualified to make legally binding decisions until it is well in its teens (depending on country). To me this indicates that humans are not fully mature until a certain age and experience is reached.

    Could we build an AI that is hardwired to gather and record all information and respond to specific data, then send it to school for 10 years and take it out to the playground or the natural world? An AI would have no problem in finding *patterns* and their *meaning* and would learn quickly how to integrate into society for specific functions. An AI would have no problem in mirroring human behavior, from existing definitions in science and observation of its surroundings.

    IMO, (setting aside the question of FW) most of our actions are reactive anyway, which is a special ability in a properly programmed (from experience and study) human. In principle, this is not so different from AI in function and decision making. It still is based on a mirror neuron system (memory) which gathers knowledge and provides cognition and recognition on which it can make decisions for action.

    Ask yourself, how many times we humans make wrong decisions? Humans are by no means a perfect computer and if a human is programmed (from experience or teaching) with false information, it will make bad decisions. Mental illness, individually or as a group, is prevalent in the human race.
