Do you think cannibalism is wrong? Do you think cannibalism is acceptable if the people eaten consented to being eaten? Discuss.

It depends on whether the people consenting are in their right minds, which is unlikely to be the case in most instances. Also, consent must be fully informed. And there's a public policy argument that could be made...

    A last resort

I'm wary of cannibalism for the connections between cannibalism and prions. While it seems probable that cannibalism in ages past have protected certain human populations against certain prion-related diseases, it's an awful lot of risk and trouble to go through.

Cannibalism is acceptable to me as a last resort. Crash a plane in the mountains, that sort of thing. But I have serious doubts about the African guerillas who were eating Pygmies in search of magical powers in warfare. As a general practice, humans should try to avoid eating one another. The value of another human as a food source should, in my opinion, be limited to suckling a teat.

    But that's just me.

OK Jeffrey. Cannibalism and slasher torture flicks? Do we need to check your refrigerator and pickle jars?

(The spelling checker thought it should be Canadianism! Is there something you guys aren't telling the rest of us???)

Tolerance, James, please exercise a little tolerance for your fellow man!

Informed consent? A man is dead, someone is wanting to eat the human meat, and you want the guy to wake him up and ask if it's alright? ...LOL!

Nobody said they were already dead, Max. Don't make assumptions.

I think there can be circumstances when eating a human is acceptable. Usually in those circumstances, moral questions are subsumed under the visceral need to survive.

why not? everyone has a right to determine their own fate and if they choose to kill themselves and have their flesh eaten then what harm is done? surely no more than any of the other selfish cunts who insist on having their corpses burnt or buried rather than used for medical research.

I think you should be allowed to eat a human as long as you successfully kill it yourself.
Or if you pay someone else to kill it, assuming you earned the money legally through your own hard work.

You should not be allowed to eat a human for free just by picking them out of the crowd, that would be ridiculous, or eat a human covered in feces, that would be disgusting.

But what about the case of Brandes who chose to be eaten by Armin Meiwas? Here you had complete consent:

"In March 2001 Meiwes advertised on the internet for a "young well-built man, who wanted to be eaten". Brandes replied.

On the evening of March 9, the two men went up to the bedroom in Meiwes' rambling timbered farmhouse. Mr Brandes swallowed 20 sleeping tablets and half a bottle of schnapps before Meiwes cut off Brandes' penis, with his agreement, and fried it for both of them to eat."

Brandes - by this stage bleeding heavily - then took a bath, while Meiwes read a Star Trek novel.

In the early hours of the morning, he finished off his victim by stabbing him in the neck with a large kitchen knife, kissing him first.

The cannibal then chopped Mr Brandes into pieces and put several bits of him in his freezer, next to a takeaway pizza, and buried the skull in his garden.

Over the next few weeks, he defrosted and cooked parts of Mr Brandes in olive oil and garlic, eventually consuming 20kg of human flesh before police finally turned up at his door."

The so called victim had answered the advertisement over the internet, was interviewed for the role, sold all of his belongings before he went to offer himself up for dinner, made a videotape giving consent. They report he was "a successful, financially secure professional, with a live-in girlfriend" and then they say he must have had a 'strong desire for self-destruction'. Well I guess so. The cannibal wasn't exactly convicted of cannibalism instead they "...charged Meiwes with murder for the purposes of sexual pleasure and with "disturbing the peace of the dead". I didn't think the dead could be disturbed:shrug:

But still I just love this understated phrase...."Disturbing the peace of the dead"

I say if people want to get eaten then let them be lunch. Why should we worry about people who are already so perverse that they would volunteer themselves, and its also a good way of keeping these modern day urban cannibals busy without disturbing the mainstream. Think about it this way, if these people can legally find each other then the cannibal doesn't have to hunt innocent people and society also gets to cull the weird. What could be wrong with that?

Oh by the way has anyone seen the film "Feed"?

Well, a concur with Tiassa on this one. I believe it's against the natural order of things, as such it's expressed in the passage of rogue proteins (prions.) The cannibals of New Guinea have that problem too. That's what happens to cause Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis. (BSE) When they take the left over parts of slaughtered cattle, render it, and feed it back to the heard. . . . Mad Cow disease. Why would you want to risk that?
  17. Dr Lou Natic Unnecessary Surgeon Registered Senior Member

Why would you risk anything? I don't think it's especially likely, it's just a possibility, you can also get tapeworm from pork.

What bothers me about debates over cannibalism is how pointless and irrelevant they are to each and every one of our lives. Arguing whether it should be legalized or not overlooks the fact that nobody wants to eat humans, and the extremely small population which does will do it whether or not it's legal as they are sick, dirty sociopaths in all likelihood. Imagine walking into a super market and seeing "Lean Negro" next to prime chicken, there's something terribly wrong with that scenario. Cannibalism is also racist when you think about it, everybody would prefer lean African meat, whereas Eastern European meat would never make it off the shelves and would grow maggots and continuously drop in price, as customers would walk by it visibly disturbed and say "wtf is that rancid smell?" and the store owners would discuss in meetings "we gotta get that shit off our shelves, let's give it to stray dogs and cats", but even the stray dogs and cats would leave the meat be until the weather finally disposed of it.

    So cannibalism is potentially racist.
  19. Dr Lou Natic Unnecessary Surgeon Registered Senior Member

Well, I don't think they should specify race at the butchers....

But ofcourse it should always be lean negroes and not eastern europeans, maybe some plump marbled western european meat, but that ofcourse would have to be extremely expensive like wagyu beef.

There is no cure for CJD. You can't cook it out, heat and fire doesn't destroy it, it is fatal. O.K. Sure, I guess it's just a possibility. If that's your cavalier attitude, I suppose all this education we have been spending money on since the early 80's warning people about how not to spread AIDS has been a total waste of time too, it's only a POSSIBILITY you can catch it, right?

Hmm, looking at the business behind cannibalism, it's clear that Chinese people and pygmies are the most regularly consumed human meat, so that could tell you something. Chinese cannibalism is usually just peasants butchering dead people and storing their arms and buttocks in freezers and eating their eyeballs as delicacies, whereas pygmies are literally hunted by their fellow African tribesman and bled upside down from trees, I suppose it's more authentic, but doesn't have much of a place in civilization.
  22. Dr Lou Natic Unnecessary Surgeon Registered Senior Member

Do you seriously wear "condoms"? lol
Do they even sell them anymore?

I suppose you also refrain from sharing needles? hahaha, nah just engaging in a bit of hyperbole there, ofcourse you share needles but hopefully you get my point.
  23. Mrs.Lucysnow Valued Senior Member

You want to know what was the most strange detail? 80 people advertised to willingly go to slaughter. 80! I mean the cannibal got to pick and choose his victim from all the 'me please, ooooh please pick me' freaks.

It must be something about computer geeks. I mean the victim was a successful computer chip developer and the predator is a systems expert.
