Chronic Sadness, Acute Shame.

On the spectrum of emotions that a human can experience, sadness, depression, etc, can be said as being the most chronic in terms of their longevity or for how long they are felt or experienced.

This suggestion and as some sufferers would testify , as being quite real and debilitating, was empirically tested .The study was conducted and published by Philippe Verduyn and Saskia Lavrijsen, from The University of Leuven, in Belgium. There work can be found in greater detail in the journal Motivation and Emotion .

The Belgian researchers asked 233 high school students to reflect on particular emotions, their duration, or how they may have reconciled or coped with them. Of the observed 27 emotions, sadness lasted the longest, while other emotions like: boredom, disgust, fear, surprise and relief, were very acute and lasted in flashes.

Interestingly, as found in the study, despite the subjective perception that time passes by slower when bored, the session of that emotion itself, is actually quite short. Emotions similar to sadness, as found in the study, like guilt or anxiety, also persisted far longer than shame or fear.

The researchers inferred that certain emotions only persist for such a short time, do to them being of little influence overall ,and that the scenarios that coerced a response from that person, were short and have little persistent value attached to them afterwards. Contrarily , emotions with long term effects, like sadness, depression, anxiety, guilt etc, stem from traumatic or scarring events , that do affect that person’s psyche more deeply, and require longer periods to cope. Reflection or rumination on such events, acts as a positive feedback loop, and is as argued by the two researchers as being a key component to why sadness or the aforementioned similar emotions ,are felt longer.

As to quote the two researchers from the article.

Emotions associated with high levels of rumination will last longest," says Verduyn

"Emotions of shorter duration are typically -- but, of course, not always -- elicited by events of relatively low importance. On the other hand, long-lasting emotions tend to be about something highly important," Lavrijsen explains further.

The lack of happiness will kill all our other positive emotions, and emotion itself will eventually die out if someone doesn't just kill us all first. The emotions listed boredom, disgust, fear, and relief are all caused by the lack of happiness in the world. Happiness as a fully realized literal term is all powerful, and would be intrinsically resposbile for our other positive emotions and abstracts. For the true power of happiness to be realized, where you live only in nirvana and ecstasy you need to be a supreme believer, or incredibly intelligent.

I appreciate that there were scientists willing to look into this, but I think that their conclusion is common sense. To say that "The emotions that last the longest are the ones that take the longest to cope with" seems pretty obvious. We feel intense emotions when the situation permits them, such as when we are overjoyed or extremely frightened. The implications as to the origin of depression is far more lasting than say, your son graduating from highschool, or a really scary haunted house. You experience emotions of pride and joy only briefly, because the origin of the joy is, in itself, not long as long lasting as the origins of depression (making a really broad statement there). The longevity of emotions all depends upon the causation of the emotion - any stipulation from that point is purely statistical hogwash.

Hey this chart might be helpful for the emotional folks:

serenity can be experienced just as long as depression.

remorse and love are also on the opposite spectrum of emotions, both can be felt for a very long time.

choosing to dedicate oneself to the working phrase "healthy nonattachment".. can ascend a being from the lesser emotional resonant identity's of being to a being whom is more complete.

Yada yada yada. I suppose we have to try to have such a science as psychology, and I know and understand depression is as real a thing as baked beans or ice, but dudes! Smoke a joint, have some beers, get a girlfriend, find Jesus, believe that UFOs or fairies are real, anything, but don't whine about how depressed you are. Get over yourself! Yes, we human beings feel bad sometimes. Often for very good reasons, but just please stop feeling sorry for yourselves.

My view of psychology is that it's a science only a hundred years or so old, and lacks the solid foundations of a science like geometry or physics, and that's a damn shame, especially since it deals with the human heart, but I suppose in 10,000 years time it won't be any farther along.

Every time I read one of these news stories about, who is it this time? The University of Leuven, in Belgium? Or whoever observed 100 participants and found yada yada blah blah blah, I want to bang my brain against ta wall. Either I think, well, of course! A child of five knows that! Or - this is just nonsense! They don't know me, and they don't know my Aunt Helen and what she's been through, and they haven't a clue what Uncle George saw and felt during the war. So why don't these 'scientists' just wipe their bums with their diplomas and go do something useful like feed the starving poor?

I took a psych 101 class in college, and it was far and away the stupidest, most useless course I ever took. Voodoo 101 would have been less bogus.

I even wrote a poem about it that I signed it 'The Shaved Reptil' (no final e) (they don't have a thang on me!) because I figured, I KNEW psychologists didn't understand one and a half things about me or anyone else who happened to have been a human being, including Fat Eliot, the Downe's Syndrome Boy who lived two streets over from me growing up. My poem read:

    Psychology hasn't pegged me
They can't get inside my head
-When they find out what I am
    Then I will be dead

When the revolution comes and we've dealt with The Rich, and The Lawyers, next up against the wall should be the psychologists, but then again, why not just ignore them as not being worth the powder to blow them to hell? Let them ladle stew in the soup kitchen.

We could change every word in your, what the fuck is this? A Chart!? To 'yada' and it would be more meaningful.

annoyance and disgust are right next to each other on my chart, these are the emotions I get from your reply.

So? Those are just words. How does that help you or me? Psychology is a science under construction. Those who study should observe for anther 5,000 years and then get back to us, hopefully, with something more concrete than studies of suburban college students who, oh my god! feel stress before final tests. Psychology has offered almost nothing that is helpful

words are only words if you are a computer. To a human emotions are always attached to words, just because many feel empathy towards particular words does not mean it is a complete lack of emotions, they just blunt those emotions. Psychology has not just solved countless marriage problems, resolved issues between students and teachers, helped solved investigation has been used successfully to conquer other companies, control other people, take over the social structure of other countries. Psychology is a very powerful tool and those who do not see the necessity and power in it, are denying themselves the privilege to understand themselves and others.

The irony of this, the computer would not understand it.
