Why do so many people find clowns so...freaky?

I personally don't mind the real thing, but I have some porcelein ones, with the pure white faces and they creep me out. I haven're seen any clown based horror movies so I can't really but it down to that, what about you?

I think that a clown can represent an archetype of the human psyche.

I haven't really given it much thought, but there has to be something 'resonnating' at a deeper level for the horror flix with clowns to be so effective throughout the millennia, 'tickling' us at some 'surreal' level.

Perhaps the white face, the 'Face of the Abyss' is our true face.
We 'paint' on that for which the role calls at the time; eventually identifying with the 'role'.

...Paint comes, paint goes, but the Truth and Horror of the Abyss is Forever...
