Peter Sellers died in 1980. Michael Bentine in 1996. Harry Secombe in 2001. And now, Spike Milligan. There are no more Goons.

One of the stars and writers of the Goon Show and author of many books, Spike Milligan appeared in several films and had several British television series. Nothing he did was ever predictable; even when he'd scripted the entire show himself, as he often did. I caught The Goon Show series when it was rerun on PBS many years ago, in the heyday of WGBH-funded “Britcoms”. It unfortunately fell flat, as his humor was too surreal for most Americans. I, on the otherhand, found his weirdness irresistible.

Any person who can call Prince Charles a "grovelling little bastard" live on TV deserves respect.

    Peace.

Spike entered into comedy and the genre has never been the same since. Without him and his fellow goons we'd have no Monty Python. No ministry for Silly Walks possibly even no Fawlty Towers.
A true loss to the world.
