Do sciforums members seem like deviants or losers?

Sometimes, and most recently, I have found myself seeing sciforums members admitting to leading lifestyles that most "normal people" I know would consider uncontrollably deviant and weird.

Just in the past couple months, I've seen three people in the same thread claiming that they are sociopaths and furthermore, speaking in such a way that suggests that they think sociopathy makes them special. I saw another thread where a Malaysian schoolteacher talks about how he enjoys hiring prostitutes. I've seen many people proudly proclaim that they do not live by any moral compass.

As well, sciforums members seem to smoke more than is average, have mental illnesses more than is average, be unemployed more than is average, and seem to be very stressed out in their real, everday lives. One person in particular is always chatting about how much his life sucks in "About the Members." I have seen only a few educated professionals post on sciforums in recent days, and even the "older members" have some extremely bizarre quirks and lifestyles that they talk about.

What is up? Are none of these people embarrassed to admit such things about themselves? I know I would be. As well, in the pictures thread, some of the people on the site look very grungy in appearance, as though they do not clean up. Perhaps their self-care deficit might be responsible for the frustrations in their lives?

What do you make of all this?

It really isn't my business to tell others what they should think. As long as they do not harm others or animals and they are consenting adults it is up to them to decide what they think, not me.

If we had real lives, what would we be doing here? I enjoy the frank discussion of our abnormalities.

Who leads a normal life? What are you hiding Wilbur. You said you would not tell something? Like spidy I think it is good debatable concepts . There can be a positive out come for people to communicate frankly. To drop the curtains of illusions is a first step in facing denial . I believe that along with facing your fears.

The higher the post count the bigger the loser.
The more crass the user title the bigger the deviant.

I've found the opposite to be more surprising - that there are (seemingly) normal, well-adjusted members.

In my short time here I've found sciforums to be a great place for sustained, focussed discussion, especially of topics that for various reasons (not convivial, not cool) you can't ask properly in real life.

I suggest you go outside and talk to "normal" people and get some perspective on things. Most are retarded and can hardly understand the simplest form of reasoning, are busy taking care of every day ordeals, like sorting garbage and buying milk and usually have nothing else in their heads either.

Look, it's a big site. It has a very high profile, so we get lots of children and trolls....that is the way life is here in the future.

A real sociopath does not chit - chat on an Internet forum save with prospective victims. Folks who actually have a psychological disorder that should inhibit them from social participation don't participate in public fora either. I see a lot of smoke and mirrors, but this is what has happened to us as we have moved our lives into this new medium...exaggeration, posing, false personnas and lots of 'little white lies'.

In actuality, most of us are just regular, common people who have personal circumstance that allows us the time to be here and who possess the interest sufficient to participate.

My take on it, at least.

You do realize that's the part that puts it high on the looser scale, right.
Alot of people are not concerned with these issues.

My cousins couldn't point out North Korea on a globe (college students)....
    I rest my case...

Most of us are a little quirky, so what! I am w/ Bebelina on this issue, if I had known about this site several years ago I could have been having intelligent and meaningful conversation years ago! Never really understood the blogging fascination and now I am totally engaged w/ it and happy to be so! Willnever you may very well be morally superior to everyone on here, how does that make you feel? Better!

Sciforums is a mishmash of all kinds of peoples w/their strengths and weaknesses, just like the real world. May it always be so!

    Not that it matters.

Sure. But a lot of 'normal' people have tidying, decorating and preparing the house in case of visitors as their highest everyday priority, and can be busy all day with a million things that have only this is a goal, so which would you rather be ?

    Why deviants or losers?

I mean: why can't it be both?

Give me a break! If I wanted to be normal I would, if I could figure out what normal is. But for those of us who are socially challenged at the present time. This forum certainly helps to alleviate boredom. I don't expect to be here forever, but it's a pit stop I'd rather not do without.

    My personal take on "normal:"

    -It's a setting on a washing machine.
-If you're worried about what normal is and being it then you are entirely too worried about what other people think of you, and letting it dictate how you lead your life far too much.
-There are those that hide their weirdness because they are ashamed of who they are...and those who like themselves despite their individual quirks.
-Smart people tend to be a little...eccentric.
-Being its' own subversive brand of fun, once you get used to people occasionally goggling at you.
-Maybe the opposite of normal isn't weird, it's exceptional.

I guess part of the reason I talk about my problems physical and mental...let it all hang out, if you because they are really bad...but I'm still here.

That feels like an accomplishment considering the number of times I came close to dying and the number of times I came close to offing myself.

But also it's the anonymity of the internet; I *think* I've covered my tracks enough that this won't be tracked to my RL anybody besides rather specialized agencies in my government, which can't disseminate that info as data-mining's still illegal for my government to do.
As long as prospective employers don't come stumbling across it...I'm okay.

It's not so much that I care what you think; if you get nasty enough about that, and I don't feel I ought to apologize for whatever it is you're being nasty about, I'll just put you on ignore, you can think what you like. It has no real-world consequences for me.

    That's over like...four years.
In high school I was designated the "weirdo" or "weird" But yes...loser.
I wasn't concerned with having a girlfriend or sports and generally horny I got into that ...well right about now....

I wouldn't be concerned with what other people think if you like yourself and you're doing no any and let live. Labels can only go so far.

I agree with her. Most people you meet you can rarely have a intelligent conversation with. Most of them stopped learning after high school. So i think we go here to let out our desire to talk about geeky intelligible conversations.
