He needs to get his ratings up. He used to have "ratings week" and that's when he would perform his miracles but that got old so now he just runs an eternal subscription drive to see how many people he can sign up. He doesn't have to do anything but he gets antsy when he does nothing and sometimes that gets him into trouble so he focuses on rating.
So he was doing nothing for ever and ever, then suddenly realized he wanted to love something, so he created the universe 13.8 billion years ago, then waited until modern man evolved (about 40 thousand years ago) and waited some more until the end of the stone age, then some more until the bronze age, then 2000 years ago decided to sent his son to die to show how much he loves us. Is that what you mean? What about the dinosaurs that "ruled" the earth for over 100 million years? Did he love them too ?
