haha, i'm assuming you mean the ova 'kite'. yeah, i saw it in original form... hentai and all.

    anyway, back to the topic.
i'm very surprised no one has mentioned 'oh my love' by sophia or 'in the cold i'm standing' by M83. they're both intense on your heart.

actually, a good amount of M83's songs can be a bit depressing... it depends on the mood you started out in. this also goes for god is an astronaut, as well as many other shoegaze bands.

here's some more to try out. a lot of them aren't reposts and are perhaps overlooked. they are all, however, just as depressing as most other songs posted in this thread. you can probably listen to most of these on hypem.com or deezer.com. otherwise, you'll just have to use limewire/bearshare/whatever.

    streets of philadelphia- bruce springsteen
    bright eyes- simon and garfunkel
    how it ends- devotchka
my body is a cage- arcade fire
broken drum (boards of canada remix)- beck
    musou tani- susumu hirasawa
    fish silent cruise- yoko kanno
honey and the moon- joseph arthur
    everybody's gotta learn sometimes- beck
    knocked up- kings of leon
    the cape of storms- hyde
when everything dies- god is an astronaut
    because i'm a girl- kiss
    planetarium- ai otsuka
    when you leave- maps
one more time, one more chance- yamazaki masayoshi
the part where you let go- hem
naked as we came- iron and wine
    orange sky- alexi murdoch

When I was in high school, and later in college nobody could feed my depressed moods better than the Cure.

I'll admit I'm not connected to music nearly as much now as I was then, but I haven't heard anybody in recent years that could capture the thoughts trapped in my head better than Robert Smith.

I haven't read all 21 pages, and don't intend to do so, but if it hasn't already been mentioned, I think "Ants Marching" is one of the most upbeat depressing songs ever written.

    "Say It Isn't So"

Skies are dark it's time for rain
Final call you board the train
    Heading for tomorrow
    I wave goodbye to yesterdays
Wipe the tears you hide your face
    Blinded by the sorrow

How can I be smiling like before
When baby, you don't love me anymore

    Say it isn't so
    Tell me you're not leaving
Say you changed your mind now
    That I am only dreaming
    That this is not goodbye
    This is starting over
    If you wanna know
    I don't wanna let go
    So say it isn't so

Ten to five at least we tried
We're still alive but hope just died
As they close the door behind you
Whistle blows and tons of steel
Shake the ground beneath the wheels
As I wish I never found you

How can I be smiling when you're gone
Will I be strong enough to carry on

Miles and miles to go before I can say,
Before I can lay my love for you to sleep
    Oh, darling oh
I got miles and miles to go
    Before anyone will ever hear
    Me laugh again

    "Cancer"

    Turn away,
If you could get me a drink
Of water 'cause my lips are chapped and faded
    Call my aunt Marie
Help her gather all my things
And bury me in all my favorite colors,
My sisters and my brothers, still,
    I will not kiss you,
'Cause the hardest part of this is leaving you.

    Now turn away,
    [Cancer lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

'Cause I'm awful just to see
'Cause all my hairs abandoned all my body,
    Oh, my agony,
Know that I will never marry,
Baby, I'm just soggy from the chemo
But counting down the days to go
    It just ain't living
And I just hope you know

That if you say (if you say)
    Goodbye today (goodbye today)
I'd ask you to be true (cause I'd ask you to be true)

'Cause the hardest part of this is leaving you
'Cause the hardest part of this is leaving you

Kenny Rogers - Ruby, don't take your love to town.

Seriously... don't laugh. Have you ever actually paid attention to the lyrics? He's a crippled war vet whose wife is going to leave him & he'd rather kill her than let her go.

    Gets me every time.

I don't know about this depression thingamy, but there are songs and other music that certainly evoke sadness, a kind of grief I suppose, a deeper feeling too, underneath that (with a lot of the stuff I try to play - classical Romantic)

Neil Young's lyrics and the music are good at doing this to me. I'd say There's a World would be one of those. It's simple, melody-wise, but then a lot of tunes with a simple structure are evocative, maybe 'cause they're fundamental at some level.

Two classical pieces that make me feel similar are Tchaikowsky's October, and Ravel's prelude in C.

You can really hear something that's kind of desolate, and lost, but also kind of hopeful, in both of these.

I have to block out thoughts of you, so I don't lose my head
They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home
There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you, Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you loved me just to put it in my face
And will you never try to reach me, it is I that wanted space

    Hate me today.
    Hate me tomorrow.
Hate me for all the things i didn't do for you.
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow.
Hate me so you can finaly see what's good for you.

I'm sober now for 3 whole months, it's one accomplishment that you helped me with.
The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won't touch again.
In a sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night
While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight
You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate.
You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take
So I'll drive so fucking far away that I'll never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind

    Hate me today.
    Hate me tomorrow.
Hate me for all the things i didn't do for you.
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow.
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you.

And with a sad heart I say bye to you and wave
Kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I have made
And like a baby boy I never was a man
Until I saw your blue eyes cry and I held your face in my hand
And then I fell down yelling "Make it go away!"
Just make her smile come back and shine just like it used to be
And then she whispered "How can you do this to me?"

    Hate me today.
    Hate me tomorrow.
Hate me for all the things i didn't do for you.
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow.
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you.
