It just seems as if there is a desperate and wanton need (DeeCee's apparent wanking to images of 7 of 9 aside) for God to exist.

    Why must God exist?

If you believe a god exists then he exists in your head.
If you believe a god doesn't exist then he doesn't exist in your head.

Neither outcome has any bearing on if a god ACTUALLY exists. I don't really see how anyone could not think this.

    That's true.
So if we look at this situation again, ''belief'' would not figure in the image created in the mind. It would simply occur. To believe that it is real would be an afterthought. The image would invoke the same realness as if your mind had a type of relationship with your husband, that did not necessarily materialise in physical reality.

That being the case would you still describe yourself as ''delusional''

    Not quite true.
In order to believe something doesn't exist means that you do hold a belief about that something. If you see what I mean.
Not believing god exists allows him to not exist in your head, however.

All Jan has done is put god on the same footing as unicorns, Winnie the Pooh and Santa Claus.

It's just a mental exercise Bells.
As I said, it is not a theistic or religious argument.

There's no need for any heavy hostilities.

    "Why must God exist? "

Because, my dear, your brains been raped and the ideas been planted.
Now you can be never set free.

God is a memetic virus. Reality is irrelevant only the sparking of neurons defines you existence. I think thats what he's getting at.

Hey Jan whatever you do don't think about the blue monkey.

Check it out. I just invented blue monkeys and made them real!

It's easy when you know how.

The relationship would still be false and yes, delusional.

Which is even more interesting when one considers that many foist Santa onto their children and then have to face some sort of feelings of betrayal when their children discover that there isn't a fat man flying around on a sleigh delivering presents.

And yet, we are meant to believe God exists, even though the belief or knowledge of God is foisted upon people and they are made to believe in it just as children are encouraged to believe in Santa. The only difference here is that the belief continues past childhood and into adulthood.. While children stop believe Santa exists, adults continue to believe God exists..

    It is not about belief.
For God NOT to exist, one cannot know anything about him.
To accept that God does not exist, means God exists, but you don't believe he does. Hence you have formed a relationship with him.

A relationship only in the sense that I don't see a reason for believing in that existence.

Again, you're using "God" when you really mean "the concept of God". Which, while correct, doesn't help make God exist at all in reality. I'll assume that wasn't your intent, and you're just discussing perceptions themselves.

And I've stated there are people that don't (or didn't) know anything at all about him.

    No, you're misunderstanding. Possibly deliberately.
I have no belief in god. Therefore he does not exist for me and there is no relationship.

It seems you feel threatened by this proposition.
God doesn't exist for you in what you regard as reality.
But God must exist, and you have a relationship with him/her, in order to come to that decision.

Also, you state that God was somehow introduced into your mind.
    I don't think that's true.
The concept of God, can still be formed by the concept of parents, boss's, people who you really respect, and by authority figures.

You know, I can't hold that image in my mind.
I'm just getting intemitent images of a chimpanzee in a sort of blue haze.

    Ah! there it is.
I see one, but it's a chimp, and it's doing what chimps do.

    "I don't think that's true."

    You don't think...
    So you can't be sure.
Great you dragged us all the way out here for something you can't be sure about.

At least I got to create a new type of monkey so I guess the trip wasn't a complete loss.
