This is our number one song on the charts?? What has this pathetic society come to?
I thought music was about talent? not just who could sell the most records?
I find local jazz musicians to blow most "modern" music away.

Look at these lyrics...
They make me sick.
Is this the kind of philosophy that people in this world are based upon?
"Keepin it real!"

Youll find me in DA CLUB...by 50 cent.

God... what garbage.

Music like this is just crap, the only rap artist I ever respected was Tupac because he rapped mostly about real life, not stupid shit.

I won't call that music...to me its more like a snappy ad jingle. But, I like it all the same. It does have a snappy melody. And the lyrics don't get much funnier.

Not all rap/hip hop has lyrics like this. Althought the best known seems to.

a few have really intelligent lyrics.
a few examples :
dead prez
immortal technique
the coup
blessed I

I like some hip-hop and shit, but that's just fucking crap. He sounds like a big fucking baby. It's music for wannabe bad boy kids. That's why it's number bastard one everywhere.

Load of shit.

Shit shit shit shit shit.

It is fucking terrible.

I wish they'd all stop fucking talking about it, and all just shoot each other. In the head. What's the matter, can't they aim a bastard gun or something???

Bunch of flying arse, mate.

exactly. tupac was the only rapper i ever liked. apart from the fact that he had a good voice, he rapped about important issues, not crap like how's he's gonna get rich, or fuck 20 women or whatever.

*Shrugs* I personally cannot stand rap music. For one thing... I do not like the way most of it sounds. For another, the lyrics usually sound absurd, but mostly, I just hate the way it sounds. Bland, repetetive... it doesn't seem very passionate. Alot of it is monotonous... makes me want to fall asleep.

Unlike other people, the violence in the music doesn't turn me off. As a matter of fact, I listen to alot of violent (lyric wise) music. I like Industrial, Death Metal, Black Metal, Gothic, and the like. The thing is, I like the way the music sounds with those genres... Rap is just... Not my style. I think it's amusing seeing these rap artists try to project an image of being tough, but it doesnt impress me, they just look pathetic. They aren't scary at all. More like whiney insecure show offs. But hey, if other people like Rap, that's their choice. People can do what they want.

Hmmm, I also cannot stand pop music, or just about anything you'd see on TV, or hear on the radio. Underground music for me.

heyya Squashbuckler

there are a couple of messages in the lyrics that are good
like party like its your birthday
which i suggest you think about for a second
assuming you have a good time on your birthday
imagine feeling like that eveyday
i dont like the way it is liked by negative down beat brainwashing
cut off beats although i guess to make more people buy it to live the american dream most artists would need to mould thier music to some extent until they have thier millions to produce what they realy want to

true rap is a story with many levels of beats and messages and is strongly tied to religouse concepts by its gospel roots.

we could equaly complain about toy handgun sales to children for playing war with

rappers who i think are worth a mention are

eric B and Rakim
grandmaster flash
ll cool j
young mc
mc hammer

they and a few others realy drew out the concept of rap into mainstream audiances
with people like michael and janet jackson incorperating huge talent of mixing gospel rap r&b roots into a new erra of music which the new concept of rap (which is actualy not realy true rap because it has construct of melodic framework with minimal beat constructs)
is now being drawn from
so it is more a representation of what people want rather than
a more precise level of artistic expresion
Point is people think sex when they go to a nightclub so they want music that can simulate the concepts without making them think too much (its a drug on that level) {supermarket type nightclubs that is, not the realy good ones}

hip hop is more an adaptation of rap to become more close to mainstream music with a more popular sound which is what happens when you mix rap with rock
sort of

it is my understanding that true rap has noo music to it.
maybe i am wrong

notice how most of the new soo called rap music has all the same lyrics and same video to it
its all the same like making a new brand of cell phone which has a different type of button on it and comes in more colours
but does the same thing.
you may be happy to know that clubs do not play mainstream music
atleast the good ones dont

groove on

Squash...you wouldn't want to be 'all up in the club, with a bottle of bub' telling ladies you wanna have sex and they'll say "yes?"
Comeon!!! Music like 50 cent was made sell on MTV and to young people who just a catchy beat and smooth lyrical flow. Good music doesn't always have to have symbolism or a "righteous" theme. I don't here In Da Club being played on Magic 98.3 - "Central Jersey's Soft Music Station"....I'll here it on the Top 40 stations that are geared towards the musically-fasion-conscientous listeners. I'll here this type of music on radio stations that have dj segments saying that wearing my socks a certain way will show that I'm a good lover. Comeon!!! Marketing wise, 50 Cent isn't any different than Britney Spears.

Why do rappers 'make it big?' 9 of 10 times it's because they have a story to tell and they have an image that will attract attention and sell. I know there are hundreds of rappers deserving fame and fortune, but if they haven't BEEN SHOT IN THE FACE or aren't from a TRAILER-TRASH-DIVORCED FAMILY or MAKE UP WORDS LIKE "JIGGA" THEY AREN'T going to be lifted from the deep abyss of underground rap.

To remedy your judgemental attitude towards rap...check out:
Those rappers aren't really mainstream, but some examples of good rap that has sold:
NWA
Outkast - "Rosa Parks" or "Bombs over Baghdad" or "The Whole World"
Nas - listen to "One Mic"...it was a big hit and isn't crap like In Da Club
somebody already mentioned Tupac - practically any song is a good one
Will Smith - Clean, intelligent, good delivery, just good music

check this thread out from a while back, it drives more on the poltical controversy of rap, but many posts deal with this subject http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10191
