-That makes little sense there freddy. I do however understand where you are coming from. There seems to be this conception that rap music = blacks. Now, if that is the case, then their are most defenitely people who will hate rap based on those circumstances.
I personally dislike "RAP CULTURE". The same way that I typically dislike "GAY CULTURE"
    rap-guns, killing,gansta's,sex,materialism, etc....
    gay-promiscuity, materialism, shallowness,vanity...etc...

These are generalizations which i am very aware of, however, they do pertain to many aspects of those cultures.
That does not mean that i do not likes gays or blacks. I just dont appreciate thier culture or the ideas that they represent.
(The same thing goes for most other "cultures" and "ideas".) Nobody said that i had to like them. But calling one "racist" based on that is unintelligent. I dislike because of facts which i believe hold a particular relevance.
Not liking someone becasue they are just " black or gay" is stupid.
Isnt that the problem with the world?!?!A lack of critical thinking?
Clean intelligent and good delivery is exactly the kind of music i apreciate. These lyrics are senseless!. I agree, I enjoy the music of will smith because its a clean delivery without him saying how rough and gangtsa like he is.

No, music doesnt always have to be rightous, music is just that, music. But i do believe that some standands should be upheld.
That the audience should be more selective of the music that they want to rank top 10!. Its not the groups fault, they are just out to make money, just like britney spears. Its up to the consumer to develop a tase and be critical about who they decide to buy records from.
But its useless, and crappy music will always run mainstream becuase its all about making money. The people will never be able to change it.
Music will always be shallow and unintelligent in the mainstream market.

Did I just read somebody say that Will Smith made music?
I thought he just ripped of a clash melody with some bad lyrics.

He made music. With decent lyrics, without all this crap about how he's a 'playa' and how many 'hoes' he's gonna f*ck.

    grazz hoppa

a few have really intelligent lyrics.
    a few examples :
    dead prez
    immortal technique
    the coup
    blessed I.

Those guys are serious! great list for inteligent rap. I especialy like immortal.

I calculate planet alignment like Mayan astronomy
    Discovering atrocities worst than Aristotle
    Subjecting children to sodomy
Your theory of the galaxy is primitive like telome
The truth about the universe stuck up like Aztec pottery
    Unpredictable results like experimental psychology
I stomp the streets with emcee's beneath my feet in colonies
But presentation and spirit revolve around autonomy
    Searching for monogamy
And cutting fake bitches out of my mind like a lobotomy
So obviously I'm not gonna be here to play games
Walked the top of the world and leave the arctic circle in flames
Battle the beast and false prophet predicted in the King James
I give a fuck about your emcee name I don't admire you
Only by dental records will you be identifiable
Cause the future is not reliable
Remember when rap was not economically viable
Comparable to what motherfuckers think of me
I might be nobody but wait till I'm together like a symphony
Resounding sound that will continue infinitely
Angel of death punishing all those who live in infamy
And shine so far away from you
You'll never get a glimpse of me
Attempts to extinguish me don't even bother me none
Like retarded kids throwing ice cubes at the sun
A victory against Immortal Technique will never be done
Just degrees of losing it every second your adding one
Some niggas dream of pushing kilos but I drop tons
With more facts and formulas and philosophical logic
Then a basement full of scientists puffing on chronic
Dipped in mycin potassium cyanide and liquid bubonic
And use it as a sonic one to find the spawn of the demonic
Screaming like onyx is of absolutely no consequence
The poison is dense enough to clog up your arteries
Mercy is not a part of me
I cause you bodily injury permanently be simply verbally murdering me
Is inconceivable cause of the unbelievable evil injected inside
The blood stream of my people
And redemption is not located under a church steeple
The feeble and the meek in soul just like the technique
Will inherit the earth, But the earth will be weak
Mother earth in her decrepit terminal illness physique
The year three thousand is bleak no happily ever after
Just death following the fourth reich disaster, a legacy of bastards
With plastic explosives your futures been eroded
Cause you forgot that when your free it's multiplied indefinitely
By the struggle that be the struggle I see
To socialistically united the third world countries
    Expose hypocrisy in Americas democracy
Sloppily obsessed with stopping me cause I speak prophecy
Trample and dismantle your capitalist philosophy
The same way I stomp the conquering rap monopoly
And I'm not a fucking prophet
    But that's the fucking prophecy

I personally dislike rap. If i want to read/hear poetry, I won't listen to it with a bass line and scratches. I don;t want to hear millionnaires babble on like idiots about what they want, think, and brag about what they get.

Well I must say this, Will Smith is like the only artist (you debate) of the hip-hop whatever persuation I actually like and own albums of. Scorn me if you will. But Techno-Metal will still reign supreme in my brain. Yay for KMFDM!

    Anyway...

    The prophecy - immortal technique

Yes the bragging phenomenon has pretty much become a rap idiom unfortunately and is pretty much what makes up 90% of the crap that is out there. I also find it disturbing if anything, when killing and rape are idiolized within the ghetto community. It' just a path towards more and more soulless lives, just as the music is losing it's soul (or has already lost it) and has simply become another commercialistic race for profitability utilizing the inherent violence that we are constantly being pounded with from the media, TV and the streets!

I cant stand 50 cent. I really wish he would fuck off and die (no really!). I have been told he has been 'made' by Eminem and Dr Dre, but I don't know if it's true. I hope not!

Surely before one can make great music one must first decide on a purpose, else anything else is likely to be expression of some physicality that is unexpressible in any other way!

Maybe some sort of diary of travels (like Bob Dylans songs

) or just a catalogue of songs in a particular key (such as the classics). Once on understands there are certain patterns in each key then, for example, recording songs in a certain key can provide some record for future musicians. This is only true is the musician is unselfish though.

Singing seems to have become mandatory today, but surely just a skill on an instrument should be enough. MUSIC (no words with a tune) has gone out of focus, and personality has become so. This is because we live in a money grabbing society. Incidently were you aware that 50 cent has been shot quite a few times?

Me too. I used to feel much the same way that a lot of people here seem to about rap, having grown up in the country and only been exposed to the MTV variety.

I discovered the alternative largely through buying an issue of AWOL magazine, which I'd highly reccomend http://awol.objector.org/

Don't rain on somebody else's fun

    "Who wears short shorts?
    We wear short shorts!"

"Good golly, Miss Molly. You sure like to ball!"

    "Who are you?
    I am the Japanese sandman!
And he goes Rang Tang Jing Jong Ranky Sanky."
Cool and ignorant mingling of mock Japanese with mock Chinese

    "Sittin' in my ya-ya,
    Thinkin' 'bout na-na."

"Have you heard about the bird?
Well, everybody knows that the bird is the word.
Bird, bird, bird is the word.
Bird, bird, bird is the word."

    "Be-bop-aloola, she's my baby."

Almost any song played at fraternity parties

    "Generals gathered in their masses,
Just like witches at black masses."
    Exquisite rhyming skill

Almost any lyric from Yes's repertoire

    "Bidi bidi bom bom."
The phenomenon is not limited to English language songs

There are a thousand more songs like this floating around in my head, many going back to before the rock era. But for some strange reason I'm having trouble remembering the lyrics.

Anyway my point is that popular music has always supported a huge base of songs with lyrics that were either complete nonsense, utterly stoopid, or embarrassingly bad. Throughout the era, at any time, there were also plenty of songs that had quite intelligent, poetic, well crafted lyrics. It's up to you to choose.

If you don't like rap, why the hell do you listen to it??? Listen to Tool or Paula Cole or John Mayer or Nina Gordon or Forest for the Trees.

A lot of people don't really listen to the lyrics. They just get a general feeling for the mood. In rap it's anger. It doesn't matter to a lot of listeners what the rappers are talking about. They're just being reassured that it's okay to be angry. Lots of people are, and some have more to be angry about than they do. Perhaps it's comforting, or cathartic, or fun. I don't know.

It almost never accomplishes anything to rain on somebody else's fun except to make one or both of you angry. Since the rap fans are already angry, you're halfway there!

Jazz, rock, blues, and hip-hop are the same musical ideal in differing degrees of complexity.

(Some) metal, (some) ambient and classical/baroque are all I can stand.

Do not despair good friend squashbuckler....i also hate rap music...except for Notorious B.I.G. ..........everything else is crap...rap is the lowest form of music....it is only a series of mognomious(spelt wrong)beats put together and added with some real crappy lyrics about being a bad boy, poping a cap, being in tha club, and bumping and grinding with nine year olds(thats for you R-Kelly)......listen to some good music...hence RadioHead.....

Hey I posted something very similar to that a couple of months ago except for vastly superior spelling

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

and I got lambasted for it so bad that I took it to heart and posted a rather conciliatory message on this thread. Where are my critics now?

And I give up, what word are you trying to spell that looks like "mognomious"? It has a cool sound, I hope it's a real word.

umm..you do of course realize that the origins of metal are in jazz, rock, and blues...if these are all part of the same musical ideal then so is metal.

Not all rap has these lyrics...the work of the artists i mentioned above generally have lyrics that are well beyond the scope of most rock/pop/country artists today.

Is it cool if a nigga just get fucked up for this one?
    Yeah! Mr. Fuck-a-Cop is BACK..
and I still don't give a fuck, yaknahmsayin?
Puffin on this indo.. in the studio with my partners out here
Pacific Heights in the house, know what I mean

    [2Pac]
I was framed, so don't make the same mistake, nigga
You gotta learn how to shake the snakes, nigga
Cause the police love to break a nigga
Send em upstate cause they straight-up hate the niggaz
So what I do is get a crew of zoo niggaz
Straight fools into rules and do niggaz
And one-time had enough of me
I'm still raw so the law can't fuck with me
They wanna send me to the pen, punk picture that
I stay strapped motherfuckers better get your gat
It ain't easy bein me I can't take it
Life as a celebrity ain't everything they make it
And ever since the movies, these hoes try to do me
If they can't screw me, they find a way to sue me
Now can you picture me coolin, at a night club?
Nothin but love, but motherfuckers wanna mean mug
Since I wear a lot of gold, they plot
Don't know what I got, and get shot with the hot ones
And aww yeah, I wanna feel guilty
but you punk motherfuckers tried to milk me
You'll get smacked behind the hill with my phone on my pager
It's beepin while I cut you with my razor
I'm not violent, I'm petrified and nervous
I got no mercy for these niggaz tryin to serve us
But if you catch me outta pocket, then I'm got
You love to shoot a nigga but you scared to pop a cop
    Now drop it

    [Chorus: 2Pac]

Strictly for my - strictly for my - strictly for my niggaz
Strictly for my - strictly for my - strictly for my niggaz
Strictly for my - strictly for my - strictly for my niggaz
Strictly for my niggaz makin G's

    [2Pac]
Reflected and disrespected, plus I'm rejected
You're just another rapper, who swears he's makin records
That's what they said - whenever I would walk by
I never tripped though - always kept my head up high
Eventually, I knew that I would find my way
After the darkest night, always comes a brighter day
And some would say, that turned away is all you'll get
I just said, "bet," and never let 'em see me sweat
Cause in the end, I knew that I would have it all
while non-believers, were prayin for my downfall
And some would call, and tell me that they wish me well
but in my heart, I'm knowin that they wish me hell
Yo get a real job, rappin doesn't pay the rent
I hate the studio cause that's where all my money went
Never surrender, it's all about the faith you've got
Don't ever stop, just push it til you hit the top
And if you drop, at least you know you gave your all
Be true to you, and that way you can never fall
But beware, these backstabbers ain't no joke
Just like a rope, they hang on you until you're broke
And when you're broke, they move onto the next dope
And there you are, can't even pay your car, nope
And when you reminisce, thinkin how you got dissed
remember how it felt, and then remember this
Be true to you, believe that there's no one bigger
Cause they can all suck dick - it's strictly for my niggaz

    [Chorus]

    [2Pac]
(This is) This is for the critics if you live up
Pick up my shit or I'll be back doin stickups
I better see five stars next to my picture
If not, Tupac will cop the glock and come knockin to getcha
I told you once motherfucker I'm a nut
Play me like a butt and you'll be bleedin when you're fucked
Niggaz know what's up but they be tryin to hold me down
I'm comin outta Oaktown, bitch fuck around
And it ain't where you from that makes you hardcore
Nigga it's the way you throw them thangs in the war
And to the marks that be talkin all that shit
Screamin out the next nigga's name like a bitch
And the niggaz that I ran into recently
The motherfuckers at the club that pulled the piece on me
You little bitches shoulda pulled the fuckin trigga
Now you live in fear of a heartless-ass nigga
Mr. Troublesome; niggaz tried to play me with the gat
but like Terminator nigga, I'll be back
Yeah! And I'll be back with a fuckin army
You tried to harm me -- ruh-ring the alarm G!
Cause most motherfuckers love to act up
without they backup, when they get jacked up they crack up
It's strictly for my niggaz at the show
so they know, not to play me like a ho (ho!!!)
    Strictly for my...

    Aw yeah, I get around
Still clown with the Underground, when we come around
    Stronger than ever

    [Tupac]
    Back to get wreck
All respect to those who break their neck to keep their hoes in check
Cause oh they sweat a brother majorly
And I don't know why, your girl keeps paging me
She tell me that she needs me, cries when she leaves me
And every time she sees me, she squeeze me, lady take it easy!
Hate to sound sleazy, but tease me, I don't want it if it's that easy
Ayo bust it, baby got a problem saying bye bye
Just another hazard of a fly guy
You ask why, don't matter, my pockets got fatter
Now everybody's looking for the latter
And ain't no need in being greedy
If you wanna see me dial the beeper number baby when you need me
And I'll be there in a jiffy
Don't be picky, just be happy with this quickie
But when you learn, you can't tie me down
Baby doll, check it out, I get around

What you mean you don't know? I get around
The Underground just don't stop for hoes, I get around
Still down with the Underground, I get around
Yeah, ayo Shock, let them hoes know

    [Shock G]
Now you can tell from my everday fits, I ain't rich
So cease and desist with them tricks (tricks)
I'm just another black man caught up in the mix (mix)
Trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents (A dime and a nickel)
Just cause I'm a freak don't mean that we could hit the sheets
Baby I can see, that you don't recognize me
I'm Shock G, the one who put the satin on your panties
Never knew a hooker that could share me, I get around

    [Money B]
What's up love, how you doing? (All right)
Well I've been hanging sanging, trying to do my thang
Oh, you heard that I was banging
Your home girl you went to school with, that's cool
But did she tell you about her sister and your cousin? Thought I wasn't
See, weekends were made for Michelob
But it's a Monday, my day, so just let me hit it, yo
And don't mistake my statement for a clown
We can keep in the down low long as you know, that I get around

    [Tupac]
Tupac and them down don't stop for hoes, I get around
Why I ain't call you? Ha ha, please

Finger tips on the hips as I dip, gotta get a tight grip, don't slip
Loose lips sink ships, it's a trip
I love the way she licks her lips, see me jocking
Put a little twist in her hips cause I'm watching
Conversations on the phone til the break of dawn
Now we all alone, why the lights on?
Turn 'em off, time to set it off, get you wet and soft
Something's on your mind, let it off
You don't know me, you just met me, you won't let me
Well if I couldn't have it (silly rabbit) why you sweating me?
It's a lot of real G's doing time
Cause a groupy bit the truth and told a lie
You picked the wrong guy baby if you're too fly
You need to hit the door, search for a new guy
Cause I only got one night in town
Break out or be clown, baby doll are you down?
    I get around

    [Shock G]
Round and round, round we go (Repeat 8x)
