here is a phantasmic visualization of the efficiency of dolphins swimming.

    Not bad for a mammal.

Gliding through the water with smooth kicks, but feet tied together. amazing speed for the effort.
No wonder the love lorn sailors did never catch any mermaids.
if we could bioengineer to have bacteria, viruses glow when disturbed, we could see the airflow, spot the superspreaders from a distance.

Is there anyway to make this technology permanently? Imagine a night time stroll down the beach and seeing this?

during red tide time in So.CA, every time the sea ist stirred the plankton lights up.

but the dolphin /plankton interface is unique, stream of bubbles off the dorsal fin.

To your last statement indeed .

But how would you do this ?

In free thought, peeking into the future, bio engineering geeks could have developed monitoring mechanism that identify any pathogen, anywhere that could become potentially harmful to humans automatically identified and tagged with a biolumious substance, also turning opaque in daylight. Then,
    everyone could see it coming.

    Fine

But how would you do this ?

    Viruses evolve as do bacteria

in the future we might be able to steer evolution to make bacteria and viruses bio luminescent.

    Good idea

But what of new bacteria and viruses ?

I leave that up to the future bio-chemists. if they are smart they will not engineer themselves out of their interesting snd well funded jobs. I am a movement guy.
It is interesting for example, how a surfer disturbs a clean, smooth, not yet broken wave, and triggers the lighting up . so it is not the plankton alone, but a certain interaction that gives the signals; if we could have a better, single fin board that disturbs the water little ----

W4Y : Among the serene experiences in life is surfing on an unbroken wave, silently gliding over the water, riding on wave energy.
The triple fin board is noisy for a reason, in the process unnecessarily provoking the plankton,
one of my anti-establishment, technical beefs.

I grok. I love all sports which use the natural elements or terrain as a mode of transportation.
Bioluminescence is a coordinated bacterial action based on a chemical language. If you can control the language you can control the bioluminescence.

I think the best way to achieve this effects is through dabbling with DNA. Cod could light up red, so fishing for them would still be challenging.
