I have heard of kissing bugs. There's various related members of that genus or what have you, but some of them, mostly the tropical kind, carry a really gross parasite. I can't think off hand what it's called, but I know it can seriously harm people.

I don't know if that's what you got bit by. Local names can be applied to many things. The one I'm thinking of resides in the very warm climates.

    Never mind, from wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triatominae

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduviidae

I've seen these occasionally, but the family has lots of members. Hard to tell which one, if any, could have bit you on the lip.

I wasn't sure how large to make the poll with options. Mosquitoes should have had their own category.
I probably should have added fleas and mites as well.

    Oi!

I just had one of those lapses where I thought you were referring to something else, like the kissing bug biting his lip. I just realised you were referring to the tick on his... d*ck.

What does the reddish ring signify?

Well, both mosquitoes and flies are in Diptera

The red ring signifies that the tick carried Borrelia burgdorferi (US), Borrelia afzelii (Europe), or Borrelia garinii (Europe) and that you are now infected with it.
The disease that these bacteria cause is known as Lyme Disease.
    Pretty serious stuff.

Ah yes. Lyme disease. I've only heard negative things about it.

If left untreated you will contract Lyme disease, but it can express itself after three months or after ten years..
And it can be pretty gruesome.
I also heard that once you have Lyme disease you can only suppress it. It's not curable.

Look here for a list of symptoms.

You say it as if it is a fact. YOU think they are annoying.
I think you are annoying. Perhaps I should get rid of you..

Well, yes, I think they are annoying...and so do most other people.

If you want to get rid of me, do it; that's your right as it is your might. Of course, you would have to deal with the law...

And besides, we're the same species. Pests are not and they are annoying.

What did I say? I said the simple truth. In this world morals are nothing; they are not a physical force of the universe. Only might makes right.

eliminate bugs and rodents that serve no purpose but to spread disease and scompete for food seems like what a reasonable and intelligent species would do.

What does that have to do with fascism? That's reality! Face it.

You can stay in la la land with fairies and gods and angels and "good", but that doesn't exist.

My brother had Lyme disease and was in the hospital for 3 months. Nasty stuff. I hate ticks.
