    They were not created.

They just appeared? Sounds kind of spooky to me.

    You've heard of evolution, right?

Yeah, what about it? Is that a magical process existing outside the boundaries of the Universe?

When you use the term "creation" in reference to human beings, that almost inevitably brings in ideas of a supernatural Creator - i.e. God.

In this thread, it almost sounds like you're trying to personify "the universe" - to make "the universe" a synonym for God. But the idea of God has a whole lot of other baggage that goes along with it.

Human life is something that has developed within the boundaries of the universe, obviously. But that does not mean that the "universe" is like a God who guided the process.

Similarly, your claim that "the universe" is "creative" implies that the universe is like a conscious entity, a person. Because it is generally assumed that "creation" requires a "Creator" - a person.

Do you think that the universe is a person?

This is beginning to sound a little like argument by incredulity.

I can't see all the nigh-infinite individual pieces over truly cosmic timescales, so I'll just assume one giant shrink-wrapped explanation.

Are you a person, james? Am I having a conversation with a person? If so, from where did that person come? You tell me the Universe is stupid, I say you are proof of the opposite.

I came from my parents, who came from their parents, etc. etc., and if we go back far enough you could, in theory, trace my ancestry back to some kind of multi-celled simple organism in a primordial sea somewhere. So: evolution.

Go back further and you'll discover that the atoms that currently make up my body (the vast majority of which did not make up my body at the time of my birth) were formed either in the big bang or in long-dead stars.

But the universe is not me. All you've proven is that there is a non-stupid thing in the universe.

Does it matter? We have an eternity to create more.

Technically, we don't, but we do have a long time.

Okay, you are an isolated ego, separate from all there is. If you find happiness there, I think you should go with it.

    Not isolated, but separate nonetheless.

Clearly, I, as a person, am distinguishable from your chair, and from you, and from the Sun, and from any number of other things that are in the universe. Therefore, I am distinguishable from the universe itself. My actions are no more the universe's actions than they are the Sun's actions or your actions.

If you find happiness in the idea that you're part of a greater whole, I have no problem with that. But if you think you are the greater whole, then I think there might be some concepts you're struggling with.
