I'm not sure I understand though. Of course it's a neat thing, but like it said in the article "Unless the store owners wish to sell their goods only to senior citizens, I doubt that this would work." For me I wouldn't bother even shopping at a store that was deafeningly annoying to be in (I'm 19 and seem to have perfectly average hearing, so I assume I would be able to hear the "Mosquito" just fine). I don't know much about the "loiterer" problem they seem to have over there, but it seems that they would lose a lot more business than they would attract. But who knows, it could work.
But it's not age, it's hearing ability. Anyone with ears in good shape will be able to hear it (of course that's why it's mostly people over 30 that can't hear it, but there are still others with near-perfect hearing until much later in life). That's almost like punishing a healthy midde-aged man for having good hearing. I just think it's annoying (obviously the objective). Is loitering and stealing really that big of a problem?
the thing they havent worked out is that high pitch noises tend to travel further, for example, when my cpu fan starts squeeking, even standing out on the lawn with a wall in the way still hurts my ears. if i was ever faced with one of these devices causing me pain for no reason, i would most certainly try to smash it, and any other device in sight as i dont know what it looks like.
