    Is anyone besides me a fanatic on this period of time? Or, for that matter, Chinese history at all? I mean...if there's a history forum, I have to find someone to talk with about the only period of history I know jack squat about.

    I'd like to know more about it. I know that the Han contributed greatly to what China is today, that the Mandarin (Or Cantonese?) word for Chinese has the word Han in it. If there are any sites of interest you could provide, I'd be obliged to read them...

    I strongly suggest you read my thread on China:

    Also, I am not a expert in Ancient Chinese history, but I am not totally oblivious to it either. Considering I did a 7000 word essay on Chinese histroy... well anyways, yes Chinese history to me is the world's most stable developmental stages, and one of the most impressive if not the most impressive civilization that has ever graced the face of the Earth.

    What was that essay on? Chinese history differs quite a bit throughout the ages.

    I'm glad you're interested, Pollux...why not just stop by your local library and pick up some books on Chinese history, pick up a book on the different dynasties, find one you're interested in, and study that. Here are a few links:

    A short outline of the Han dynasty.
    {Note: Ts'ao Ts'ao, one of the people mentioned...that name is an old translation. It is now written 'Cao Cao.' I can't say much more for the other names, but it's possible those have yet to be updated with the newer, revised translation of Chinese.}

    An essay on the later Han and the fall of the Han.

    Here's a site with tons of references links about Zhou dynasty, apparently.

    I'd add more, but frankly, I read more books on the matter from a library, from friends, or from other History-fanatics I've met than surf the web. Sorry if those links aren't too helpful, I didn't check them over much.

    What was that essay on?

    Chinese history from the beginning to the end of the Ming, I didn't even get started on the Qing, the Republic, the Warlord years, the Kuomintang, Japanese, or Communist eras...

    That's quite a lot of time to cover in only 7,000 words!! My goodness...wow.

    Good job! I hope you got a good grade on it.

    No i got a mere 67% because I was not supposed to do history of China, but rather her independant development. What I say is how could I do that without explaining the history, oh well...I liked the essay that's all that matters.

    Oh. Well, maybe a little less time on the history, a little more comparing modern China to historical China?

    I couldn't talk about Modern China, I wanted to connect China's political development with her intellectual, scientific development.

    My attention was instantly focussed on this topic for China is a favourite subject of mine for all the years I have been a student of history. However, my interest is almost entirely on its modern period beginning with the clash with Western imperialism. But I happen to be reading at present The Sextants of Beijing by Joanna Waley Cohen which demonstrates that the European perception of China as a closed society ripe for "opening" is shown by history to be a false one and that China has traded openly and continuously with foreign powers for milennia.

    If there are history buffs here whose interest covers East Asia in the modern era, it's a given that we'd find much to discuss. As early as high school in the early 1950s I felt that the above region would be a major geopolitical region and that a knowledge of its history would prove useful. I have a fairly comprehensive library that grows regularly due to membership in Ebay and my subscription to specialist lists.
