Today NATO, with the USA, Britain and significant Afghani forces began a major offensive in Helmand Province in the southern half of the country. About 2,500 troops from the home nation, lead by 15,000 troops comprised mostly of American & British (and smaller Canadian, Danish, Estonian & French) units will spearhead the mission into the Taliban stronghold to finally bring Helmand under NATO and Afghanistan's control.

allright, so whats the question posed here in the thread? Will NATO win the mission in this Afghan offensive?

    no.

And what of civilian casulties in Marjah, who is going to be responsible for them?

no one, right? cause NATO is doing it all good.

Their strategy sounds very good. They are taking care not to fire on civilians, even if they are fired upon, but critically, they will follow up with a working Afghani government. It's a brilliant plan.

I wonder how many of those poor people will die before the week is over.

"working Afghani government" = puppets that feed the demands of greedy unsustainable societies.

I'm sure your beloved Taliban will suffer some losses. Pray for their brave warrior souls.

As long as they have resources that the west wants they will continue to die. If only they were like the Saudis, no one would care how extreme they were.

When the Taliban have stopped bombing and executing people for singing or voting, the world will lose interest, and they can go ahead and be as backward as they want.

So if Afghanistan's economic and quality of life indicators end up rising over the next 10 years, it would be because of a western conspiracy to impoverish them?

Yeah because the world is so interested in bombing people for human rights. Just like they are in imposing rulers on them for democracy and indebting them out of jobs and food and health for development. You care so much for Afghans that you spent 50 million dollars to make textbooks for their children so they could study like this:

There should be a special place in hell for people who paid for this with their tax dollars and didn't care enough what they were doing to other peoples children for 20 years

And are now killing what they created. Those kids never stood a chance of any kind of decent life

If there is such a thing as Hell, I'm sure anyone who incites people to murder in the name of Islam will be going there. That would include a lot more people than just Americans or American officials.

Indeed, there is very little the Americans do without puppets like Karzai and the ISI enabling them:

No question necessary, Draq. It's a "World Event" not a "Politics" issue.

As to them "winning", well, the battle will be won. It's the peace that take finessing.

He's not far off you know, the reconstruction projects and teacher training is still by CAS - which is the very same department at the very same University of Nebraska at Omaha - still run by the very charismatic Tom Gouttierre, who used to train the basket ball team in Afghanistan for his old friend Zalmay Khalilzad of UNOCAL fame [alongwith Hamid Karzai]

    A regular ole boys club
    And then there is this:
A comprehensive examination of companies that won contracts for work in Iraq and Afghanistan — and of their campaign contributions, led by General Electric and Vinnell Corporation (the former Northrup Grumman).

After their success with those textbooks one can only wonder what they'll cook up in the next 20 years

That the news is touting a new intense surge in "pacification" proves that little real military success has occurred in the last 8 years. 700 military camps spread across Afghanistan are still unable to control the place.
Afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires and the American empire is trapped in it like a dying mammoth sinking into the tar pits.

Yes, that's right. Just as the Afghans marched on Moscow and brought the Soviets to their knees, so shall the Taliban soon be at America's shores. And that's when Australia's secret kangaroo cavalry will march in for the kill.

More realistically, Marjah will either be 99% ridden of the Taliban, or there won't be much of anything left to call Marjah by the time it's all finished.
