So a friend and I were having a conversation regarding marriage, we are trying to determine if more countries base marriage on actual love or for personal gain. He told me places such as Russia and the surrounding areas most marriages are based off of advancement within society. So that has me wondering what other countries might follow that.

    Thoughts?

My friend was saying that several countries the woman/men only get married to gain advancement whether it be for status, employment, be able to move to another country etc.

I think the reality is most thoughtful people take some care when they decide to marry. What is "love"? One has to think, not just of a current sexual or intellectual infatuation, but of what kind of joint life can be envisaged for 30 years or more, whether one can agree how to bring up any children, possibly whether the two families will get along well enough, and so on. So yes I think there is an element of cold calculation in many marriage decisions, and rightly so. It does nobody any favours to get saddled permanently with a mate that may not see the big decisions of life in a compatible way.

But I think you pose a false dichotomy. It is not either/or, but a blend of the emotional with the rational.

I'm an American, as much as I would like to find love, I will probably never will if everything is based on "advancements in society" or "personal gain". I recently realized "love" isn't practical, reasonable or no longer possible.

Ha.. I'm joking. I think love means different things to different people and its quite obvious when a relationship is based on love, lust or personal gain. I think a lot of people are afraid of love which is why they resort to something else.

My third marriage I did it fir necessity I had 2 sons to be raised , because my second wife got killed in a car accident , There was no love dove I asked the girl if she was willing to help me rise my boys ,(the girl was a friend of my wife, I met her one year ago, wen I meat her I did not remember how she looked like ) as she agreed she come to live with me , now we are 16 years together and I learned to love her and vice verse . She is a nurse and we live happy. My point is you can learn to love each other in time if you make a commitment and not take advantage, Marriage is help each other , not you do that and I do the other

Arauca, I'm sorry to hear that and its great that you found someone else to have a relationship with. Thanks for your kind gestures. Maybe, I will find someone one day, but I honestly can't say that I ever will.

For me, it involves someone else that is willing to put up with my craziness.
