Is there any chance that someone could be appointed that would take their role as mod more seriously than the current one (I don't even know who that is - I've never seen any action they've taken)? Cases in point are the QWC threads and Paul Dixon's endless spamming.

We definitely need another active moderator there.

    Thanks for suggestion.

Paul W. Dixon only posts in one thread, as far as I'm aware. If you don't like his posts, don't read that thread.

If we take this view, why do we need any moderators at all?

A lot of the stuff in the Astronomy subforum properly belongs in pseudoscience or the cesspool. Some people post in that forum rather than in the physics subforum because they know their silliness is not tolerated in physics.

Paul Dixon's stuff is part of that silliness, but he only has one thread and it is a part of the sciforums culture. Besides, that thread will soon be moot. We only have a few months before the LHC is activated.

The same could be said of OilIsMastery's posting, but you had no problem banning him.

I'm sure Paul Dixon's posts aren't offensive if you don't take the subject matter seriously. However, if you care about people reading fallacies passed off as science fact, then they are very offensive.

If every member only posted in one thread, then we probably wouldn't need moderators. Then again, we wouldn't have a forum, as such, either, but a bunch of blogs.

I don't think Paul will quit his crusade just because the LHC comes on line.

OIM started spamming his rubbish all over the forum. Not quite the same thing.

Should have parsed the quote, my bad.

I guess the question is about what level of scientific integrity one demands in posts where the poster poses as an expert. In my mind, someone who says ``Everybody before me was wrong, you all are all idiots, and I'm the only one who knows whats going on'' is automatically put under more scrutiny.

Either way, I nominate DH for Astronomy/Cosmology mod, if the position is open.

I had asked Porfiry about Paul Dixon when I moderated that forum, and he responded that Paul was giving him money and to leave his thread alone. I complied.

yes but space is vastly unexplored rterritory, perhaps this accounts for the less than scientifically acceptable responses. to one person it is accurate and acceptable but to another it is not.
