    National Anthems

Australia's National Anthem Advance Australia Fair dull as dishes in the sink

Referendum held few years ago had Waltzing Matilda as a chance

It should have won. But the old and whatever outnumbered the young and free

Hmmm.... I'm not so sure. How many other national anthems have you listened to, for comparison? I'd say that Australia's one is quite passable. Everything is relative.
Is a song about a guy who steals sheep and then commits suicide really a good idea for a national anthem, do you think?

Also, wasn't there some kind of referendum on this, or something? The people got to choose, and the majority chose Advance Australia Fair. I think...

Yes I mentioned that. And I understand the oldies in the breakdown held sway

Everything being relative have heard Jolly Swagman was being given a disproportionate hard time by authorities

Early signs of standing up to unreasonable authority I think good subject for national anthem yes

Advance Australia Fare sounds like a real estate agent pointing out the benefits of buy now

More representative of Australia's history and people's attitude to authority than what we currently have as an anthem..

While it doesn't recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their ties or history to the land, it's still better than what we currently have and which is a pretty dishonest representation of Australia when it comes to equal advancement and fairness.

    Recent history, perhaps.
It could be seen as aspirational.

There has been an official word change from "young and free" to "one and free" recently, hasn't there? Small steps.

What else is problematic about it? The claim that we're (all) "free"?

    History of convicts, etc..

    Advance Australia Fair?

No. Few know past the first verse. Soporific comes to mind. But that's not its biggest issue..

It's still built on a false premise that does not apply to everyone.
You should ask Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders if in "history’s page, let every stage", they were or are ever allowed to be "one and free".

Or refugees for that matter and those Australia locked up in off-shore detention, if "For those who’ve come across the seas; We’ve boundless plains to share" applies to them in any way, shape or form?

Our anthem is a lie about who we are as a country and how we have treated people.

Exactly. Better than Mogadon (trade.name of benzodiazepine group, brand of nitrazepam, used to treat insomnia)

I recall voting in referendum giving Aborigines the vote (can't remember year and to lazy to Google)

Again to lazy to look up. Do you happen to recall when the white Australia policy ended?

OK I was unaware of either period and yes I agree NO WAY Co-in-ki-dink

When typing my reply I was asked by Google translate to translate Co-in-ki-dink
    as in Co-in-ki-dink from Arabic

Now getting request to add Co-in-ki-dink to personal dictionary - don't think so

Urinated myself laughing for five minutes

Just to widen the discussion beyond Australia, I was interested to discover that the (anonymous) tune of the UK national anthem has also been used as the national anthem of the German Empire (until 1918), is used to this day by Liechtenstein and is also used as a royal anthem (though not the national anthem) in Norway. Curious, as I have never thought it was that good a tune.

One of the best tunes has to be the German national anthem, rather paradoxically the hymn tune "Austria"

, by Haydn - who was Austrian. In the UK, the hymn is often known by its first line: "Glorious things of thee are spoken". I'm glad they didn't have to change it after the war. It would have been awful if that splendid tune had been allowed to become synonymous with the Turd Reich.

I never liked the national anthem of the USA. Most anthems seem to be about the country, ours is just the glorification of a battle during war. It kind of sends a unsettling message IMO.

Only word I like is Girt

After checking Girt meanings and origin(s) seems not really suitable

    Etymology 1 Edit
Alteration of girth (“belt, circumference, brace”).

It just seems so natural to add ''dinkum'' at the end of the title.

    Advance Australia Fair Dinkum.

I've always thought they should set that Monty Python rhyme to music:

    This here is the wattle,
    The emblem of our land,
You can stick it in a bottle.
You can hold it in your hand.
    Amen.

    Speaking of wattle and trees.
The 'lumberjack' song would be a good anthem for Canada
    Very rousing.
