New development: the NSA likes electronic phonebooks so much that they've started a HUGE collection of them.

No confirmation from additional sources, but then again the Post is a relatively stable source itself. Half a million in a day. I don't think this corresponds to Obama's declarations on the subject.

"During a single day last year, the NSA's Special Source Operations branch collected 444,743 e-mail address books from Yahoo, 105,068 from Hotmail, 82,857 from Facebook, 33,697 from Gmail and 22,881 from unspecified other providers, the Post said, according to an internal NSA PowerPoint presentation."

Note how many were from Yahoo.
    Bunch of criminals!
    They should rename themselves Jihadyahoo.

I'm on gmail, the least suspected emailer group.
If you are on google, you obviously have nothing to hide, because google already record and log everything you do.

First they came for the Linux people, and no one spoke up, since, really, no one uses it. Then they came for the Mac people, and there was actually a little cheering. When they came for the Windows people, there was no one left to defend them.

    A bedtime tale.
The queen of the fairies was called Windows. One day she gave all the little children each a secret cloak.
She told them that so long as they wore it no-one could see them, so they could play safely in the forest.
But then she gave the evil wizard, who hated the children, some magic glasses.
Then he could see them plain as day................

Yahoo is one of the main online emails that get's used by spammers etc. What isn't mentioned however is that Yahoo earlier this year "recycled" peoples email addresses which meant accounts were deleted likely prior to creating an NSA output (It was noted that people could create a previously existent username and gain access to any emails that might still be sent to that address, potentially creating a huge security problem).

400,000+ email addresses is actually a very small number when you consider how many millions of people have an account or two. So it's obviously following specific filters, like specific IP ranges that the user has used, specific keywords and obviously the interlinking of accounts through the email address books.

The lack of trust is going to kill corporate Cloud use.
People are now setting up their own cloud servers.

You missed the point. That was one day's trawling. They were using the figures from that day to show the scale of the operation.
They are doing it all the time.

Scanning address books will give a huge depth of information on commercial activities as well as criminal activity and personal data.
All large companies must now be rethinking how they are using the internet.

That's a pretty big haul, possibly 250 million/year. Presumably the main target would be Muslims/Islamists in other countries, but I'm still curious to know how many Americans were targeted, discounting such Islamists.

Why your obsession with privacy, is it deficiencies in measurement, infidelity, deviancy or crime? Is it better to hide our true nature or expose it and deal with it?

That's an interesting way to frame the discussion. A better question would be: What's your obsession with voyeurism? Privacy is the natural default.

Why? Who cares? Perhaps it has to do with pooping? You may notice, human babies, like all carnivores, will often hide when they poop in their nappies. Why? Unlike herbivores, which poop while walking and can run while pooping, carnivores need to stop and poop - at that point humans were vulnerable to an attack. Thus that behaviour, of privacy while pooping, is built right into our DNA. You may notice our bathrooms have private toilets when we poop? We've evolved to have 'privacy'.

You wouldn't find it perverse if some sociopath kicked in the door to your toilet while you were taking a shit and started recording? How about if they didn't kick in the door, and secretly recorded? How about if you discovered they were secretly record you taking a shit? That wouldn't piss you right the f*ck off? Well, thank the Gods we have a 4th Amendment to prevent pervert voyeurs from violating our natural instinct to have personal privacy.

The Democratic-wing of the Authoritarian Party thinks it's perfectly fine of them to record you taking shit. They're working to make it legal. They're going to win, because our "Law Makers" are Authoritarian SOCIOPATHS.

Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein, the senior United States Senator from California and member of the Democratic-wing of the Authoritarian Party, just codified the ability of NSA to spy on Americans.

That's right, 15 career politicians, some from the left-wing of the Authoritarian Party and other's from the right-wing, decided it's OK for them, to spy on us, our children, our personal conversations - and to record and keep all of this data - for their use. "Improvement" Act indeed - if you're a Sociopath.

These Authoritarian sociopaths are more than happy to use creative-interpretations of the sickening-titled "Patriot" Act to ensure each and every single one of our private conversations are recorded for use by the State. There has never been a case of any Terrorist being caught by recording Americans private conversations. Never. None. It's all just bullshit. These sociopaths want to use this information to exert more control over the Americans public. To manipulate, control, corral their tax-cattle, squeezing each and every cent you make out of your pocket and into theirs.

It's of no surprize at all that Dianne Feinstein’s Husband has been selling off United States Post Office Real Estate to His Friends on the Cheap. (summary here).

These people are Authoritarian sociopaths. They do not "feel" an particular emotion about any particular issue. All of them belong to the Authoritarian party. They label themselves as "Democrat" or "Republican" just to get votes. Any one of them would happy take on the other persona if it meant staying in power. Because, power is all these sociopaths crave. The more of it they get, the more of it they want.

Our Civil "Servants" in "Government" are not spending $100s of billions (probably trillions) of our children's future prosperity building up a Stasi NSA to spy on some goat f*cker in Afghanistan. The NSA is here for you and your children. And there is nothing at all you can do to stop it. Nothing. The spying is here and it's here to stay. You can vote for whomever the f*ck you want to vote for. That will not change the fact your grandchildren will grow up in an America without personal privacy. The only thing they'll know is 'their' wonderful Government LOVES them and is working very hard to keep them safe and healthy. Just as many of you believe. They probably won't understand why their lives are so poor. And the really brilliant thing is, they'll want to blame someone, the Chinese, maybe the Germans, the rich, the 'Left' or the 'Right' - but they'll never stop and think to blame their parents. The Treasury's 30 year T-Bond's are quite ingenious, if not nefarious, if you stop to think about it.

Glenn Greenwald’s Partner Accused of ‘Espionage’ and ‘Terrorism’

Well, there you go. Journalism is now Terrorism. Whistleblowers are now Terrorists.

Another wonderfully succinct and quite clear example of the State doing what it's designed and obligated to do: Initiate Force against Innocent People. The NSA is here to spy on us. Not goat-f*ckers over in Afghanistan. Our 'Civil Servants' are forcing us, their Employers to pay hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars on Spyware to be used AGAINST us. Not only that, they're willing to sell hundreds of Billions more in T-Bonds, to the Chinese, to SPY ON us.

Is this going to change? Nope. Get used to not having privacy - and with it, a less prosperous life for you and your children. You can say, I was there waving the "I Love Bush" sign when he signed the "Patriot" Act into Law (being the "LawMaker" that he is). I was there waving the "Hope and Change" sign as Obama expanded the scope beyond even the evilest wishes of Cheney and turned this hundred billion dollar military industrial complex against the journalists, their families and finally us.

Hope you like your Government - because you'll be getting much more of it as time goes on. It isn't going to get smaller - nope. The First Law of a parasite like the State - is it always grows. It never shrinks. When our millionaire political Masters talk about shrinking government - what they mean by 'shrinking' is growing government.

And, it just keeps coming: Google ‘Shocked’ The NSA Hacked Its Servers

I'll believe it if they sue the Government for violating the 4th amendment. Then we can see if the Government really does legally treat companies as people.

If voyeurism is getting my kicks watching criminals plot their crimes, then color me guilty. Watching people exchange or eliminate bodily fluids would get tiresome rather quickly. Observation and curiosity are the engines of human progress.

Maybe you should spend more time doing research on poop instead of posting it online. Toddlers don’t instinctively hide while pooping, they learn to associate disgust for the act from the reaction of the adults around them. Our psychological need to hide while crapping is culturally conditioned, not written in our DNA. Animals are no more at risk during the act of defecation than they are while eating or licking themselves. When’s the last time you saw a dog run for cover to take a dump? While at times predators may find it advantageous to hide their poop to evade enemies, at other times it may be openly deposited to ward them off. If you want to pattern your behavior on examples from nature then here’s some inspiration.

Most toddlers most certainly do instinctively hide when they poop and it has absolutely nothing to do with associated disgust. It's a survival instinct present in omnivores and carnivores but not herbivores. It is not culturally conditions and it is written into our and other animals DNA.

As for your desire to snoop on everyone and anyone in the hunt for someone committing a crime - the 4th amendment makes this illegal. Up until the "Patriot" Act it still was illegal. But, don't worry. Your side will win this and many more battles against our Civil Liberties in the name of Justice and the War on Terror. At the same time society will become less prosperous. Lucky you.

And you base these opinions on what studies or observations?

Toilet training: methods, parental expectations and associated dysfunctions
Do you also assume that the practice of hiding our nakedness is written in our DNA?

No shyness evident in this voyeurism.

That some animals at times attempt to hide their poop doesn’t imply they’re trying to hide themselves. Good luck trying to find evidence for your defecation privacy gene.

    Add this :

Over the last week the German newspaper Der Spiegel and Sydney Morning Herald disclosed that the Australian Government was carrying out electronic surveillance and eavesdropping on phone and internet communications. The security organization Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) concealed special electronic equipment within the Australian diplomatic missions in Kuala Lumpur, Port Moresby, PNG, Bangkok, Beijing, Dili, Jakarta, and Hanoi, based upon information released by intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden.
