Ralph Vaughan Williams: "The Lark Ascending".

    Richard Strauss: "Metamorphosen".

By my lights, the two signature compositions of the Romantic Era. And polar opposites. The one is seventeen minutes of unbridled optimism. The other is a somewhat longer descent into abject despair. Both were written for something other than the standard orchestra. The Strauss in particular, it uses something like eighteen solo stringed instruments.

Anything by the Strauss family is ok by me, although I'm particularly partial to "Tales Of The Vienna Woods".

    Doors - Gloria

    Yeah, right.
Did you hear about my baby? she come around,
She come round here, the head to the ground?
Come round here just about midnight,
She makes me feel so good, make me feel all right.

She come round my street, now
She come to my house and
    Knock upon my door
Climbing up my stairs, one, two
    [unwriteable improvisation]
    Come on baby
Here she is in my room, oh boy

    Hey what?s your name?
    How old are you?
    Where?d you go to school?
    Aha, yeah
    Aha, yeah
    Ah, ah yeah, ah yeah
    Oh haa, mmm

Well, now that we know each other a little bit better,
Why don?t you come over here
    Make me feel all right!

    Gloria, gloria
    Gloria, gloria
    Gloria, gloria
    All night, all day
    All right, okey, yey!
    (gloria, gloria)

You were my queen and I was your fool,
    Riding home after school.
    You took me home
    To your house.
    Your father?s at work,
    Your mama?s out shopping around.
    Check me into your room.
    Show me your thing.
    Why?d you do it baby?

    Getting softer, slow it down
    Softer, get it down

Now you show me your thing.
Wrap your legs around my neck,
Wrap your arms around my feet, yeah
Wrap your hair around my skin.
I?m gonna huh, right, ok, yeah.

It?s getting harder, it?s getting too darn fast
    It?s getting harder

    All right!
Come on, now, let?s get it on.
Too late, too late, too late,
Too late, too late, too late,
    Can?t stop, wow!
    Make me feel all right!

    Gloria, gloria
    Gloria, gloria
    All night, all day
    All right, okey, yey!
    Gloria, gloria

Keep the whole thing going, baby!
    All right!
    All right!
    Aaaaah

    Billy Joel: "The downeaster Alexa"

Well Im on the Downeaster Alexa
+ Im cruising thru Black Island Sound
well I'm charting a corse to the vinyard
But tonite I am Nantucket bound.

Took on deisel back in Montook yesterday
Left this mornin from the bell in Garters bay
Like all the locals here, I had to sell my home
To proud to leave I work my fingers to the bone
so I could own my Downeaster Alexa
+ I go where the ocean is deep,
Ther are giants out there in the canyons,
And a good captain cant fall asleep..

I got bills to pay + children who need clothes
Know theres fish out there, but where God only knows
They say these waters aint what they used to be
But I got people back on land who caount on me

So if you see my Downester Alexa
If you work with the rod + the reel,
Tell my wife I am trawling Atlantis
And I still got my hands on the wheel..

I was a bay man lie my father was before,
Cant make a living as a bay man anymore
There aint much future for a man who works the sea,
There aint no island left for islanders like me..

    Ya-ya-yaa, yo! Ya-ya-yaa, ya-yo!

Billy Joel has a great talent for writing engaging stories about the little ordinary parts of America that we've lost and the little ordinary people who populated them. Remember "Allentown"? "We Didn't Start the Fire?"

Actually some of his songs were written about little ordinary parts of America that were still vibrantly alive, but over the years even though the songs have retained their vibrancy, the places have been lost. "Los Angelenos" was a good laugh twenty years ago when we lived there -- "sneaking off to garages for exotic massages" -- "going nowhere on the streets with Spanish names." Now when we go back occasionally and all the commercial signs that used to be in Spanish and Chinese are now in alphabets I don't even recognize, it's nostalgia. The streets with Spanish names are still there, but the people who live there now probably don't realize that they're any different from the streets with English names.

By the way, for all you readers who aren't from the American northeast and don't watch "Jeopardy," a Downeaster is a person from Maine (and should be capitalized).

    Taxi by Harry Chapin

It was raining hard in 'Frisco,
I needed one more fare to make my night.
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down,
She got in at the light.

Oh, where you going to, my lady blue,
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain.
She just looked out the window, and said
    "Sixteen Parkside Lane".

    Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before,
But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken"
And she didn't say anything more.

It took a while, but she looked in the mirror,
And she glanced at the license for my name.
A smile seemed to come to her slowly,
It was a sad smile, just the same.
And she said, "How are you Harry?"
I said, "How are you Sue?
    Through the too many miles
    and the too little smiles
    I still remember you."

It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.
You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off to find the sky.

Oh, I've got something inside me,
    To drive a princess blind.
    There's a wild man, wizard,
He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind.
Oh, I've got something inside me,
    Not what my life's about,
Cause I've been letting my outside tide me,
Over 'till my time, runs out.

Baby's so high that she's skying,
Yes she's flying, afraid to fall.
I'll tell you why baby's crying,
Cause she's dying, aren't we all.

There was not much more for us to talk about,
Whatever we had once was gone.
So I turned my cab into the driveway,
Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns.
And she said we must get together,
But I knew it'd never be arranged.
And she handed me twenty dollars,
For a two fifty fare, she said
    "Harry, keep the change."
Well another man might have been angry,
And another man might have been hurt,
But another man never would have let her go...
I stashed the bill in my shirt.

And she walked away in silence,
It's strange, how you never know,
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for,
Such a long, long time ago.

You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off for the sky.
    And here, she's acting happy,
    Inside her handsome home.
And me, I'm flying in my taxi,
    Taking tips, and getting stoned,
I go flying so high, when I'm stoned.

Yes. That last line, "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave," is so true. I've been away from California for almost three years, forced by economics to take a job in the D.C. area. I've learned to get along here, I've made some friends, I have a few good times, I'm doing well at the job, and I've even learned to make peace with the four different seasons of unbearable weather and the worst traffic in the country. But if I didn't get to go home to California twice a year I would be insane. This place is like another planet to me. I felt more at home in Bulgaria than I do here.

White Bird By Its A Beautiful Day

    White Bird
    In a golden cage
    On a winter's day
    In the rain
    White bird
    In a golden cage
    Alone

    The leaves blow
    Cross the long black road
    To the darkened skies
    In its rage
    But the white bird
    Just sits in her cage
    Unknown.

    White bird must fly
    Or she will die

    White bird
    Dreams of the aspen tree
    With their dying leaves
    Turning gold
    But the white bird
    Just sits in her cage
    Growing old.

    White bird must fly
    Or she will die
    White bird must fly
    Or she will die

    The sunsets come
    The sunsets go
    The clouds Float by
    And The Earth Turns slow
    And the Young Birds Eyes
    Do always Glow
    And She must fly
    She must fly
    She must fly

    White bird
    In a golden cage
    On a winter's day
    In the rain
    White bird
    In a golden cage
    Alone

    White bird must fly
    Or she will die
    White bird must fly
    Or she will die
    White bird must fly
    Or she will die
    White bird must fly

Led Zeppelin "Kashmir" Sweet song. Powerful in a way

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
    Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
    Ohh.

When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

    Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

I've lived for a high school grade
    and running round the track
I've lived for a hundred girls
that have never called me back
    I've lived for the stage
playing in a rock and roll band
but thats all gonna end some day
and I'll have nowhere to stand

    I've lived for the future
    and especially the past
    but tomorrow never got here
    and the memories dont last
so I'm takin all I thought I knew
    and throwin it away
I'm gonna start livin for everything
    man I'm livin for today

    I've live for a party
    poppin pills and drinkin booze
I've lived for every music style
country rock pop dance n blues
    the partyin leaves you empty
and the songs they always end
and as much fun as the booze is
it makes a pretty shitty friend

    I've lived for being myself
and lived for being someone else
and though neither one was perfect
the first was better for my health
and I'm done caring what people think
    about the things I say
I'm not livin for no strangers praise
    man I'm livin for today

I dont think that its too morbid to say
we all might die tomorrow come what may

like I should've learned the day
    my dear dad passed away
    you're livin for everything
    when you're livin for today

so forget all that other stuff
    and start livin for today

I must have lived for more things
than there are names to call
but right now I'm just livin
for a soft spot to fall
    you see I'm tired
    but I'm happy
coz thats what livin for today can do
but it sure has been easy
since I've been livin every day with you

yeah it sure has been easy
since I've been livin every day with you

What the fuck was this thread doing in the second page?

And people, take it easy with the lyrics, please. There are way too many of them.

    Anyway:

    Ronnie Earl: Now My Soul

Ronnie Earl: I Feel Like Goin' On

(If you like bluesy/jazzy guitar, listen to Earl. Now. Because he is the best, simple as that.)

    The Jeevas: Cowboys and Indians
