I thought that whatever the woman ingests, so does the baby? Such as alcohol, vitamins and whatever else she eats? Or does the baby take in only small amounts of what the mother passes on to it? Then, semen and alcohol would be safe, in small amounts?

Overthestars: Well, if you're talking alcohol that's a different story- FAS and chinky gremlin babies. The mother can actually ingest small amounts of most stimulants (and by stimulants I don't mean heroine, more like caffeine) with nothing happening. Semen however, is a natural byproduct of the body, with natural products in it- vitamins, cholesterol, carbs and Kool Aid. Kidding on the last one- anyway, question is simple. The sperm will not 'harm' the baby and I doubt a woman can ingest enough in one sitting to drown her fetus in sperm, and if anything, through the placenta.
The fetus receives nutrients, drugs, etc., through the umbilicus, which is attached to the placenta, which receives blood from the mother's bloodstream. This means that the fetus only receives substances which have gotten into the mother's blood. In order to get there, they have been processed by the stomach, liver, intestines, etc. -- digested, in other words. Semen is high in protein and is digested in the small intestine like any other animal tissue. By the time it is allowed to pass through the intestinal walls into the mother's bloodstream where the fetus can get it, it has been broken down into amino acids, a perfectly fine source of protein for a growing baby. Broccoli and other vegetables suffer a similar fate. Brachiates like broccoli are mostly fiber, which passes all the way through the mother's digestive tract and out the other end. Fetuses don't need fiber since they're not really exercising their digestive tract as they get their nutrition intravenously, as it were. The bits of vitamins and minerals in the vegetable pass through the mother's liver (or perhaps her intestinal wall) into her bloodstream, and the fetus helps himself to those, which he indeed does need to sustain healthy growth. Just remember that the fetus is nourished directly by the mother's blood, which passes more-or-less directly into his own blood through the placenta. The fetus does not eat or digest food or eliminate solid waste. The waste products in his bloodstream are passed back to the mother and processed by her liver, intestines, and kidneys. The fetus does not receive undigested food. Drugs are a special case, of course, because our bodies don't break them down and they have the ability to pass into our bloodstream, through the stomach walls, intestinal walls, or liver. From the mother's bloodstream they can pass into the baby's blood. There's a lot of hullabaloo about alcohol and other drugs being able to pass from the mother's blood into the baby's, but we have to remember that the placenta does act as a filter of sorts. It probably blocks out quite a bit of drugs and toxins. I suspect that gendanken probably knows what he (she? sorry I don't know you gendy) is talking about and that only a small portion of what the mother ingests in the way of dangerous chemicals actually gets into the fetus. Women have been smoking and drinking for decades and nonetheless having healthy babies who grew up to be healthy adults.
