The benefits lie in the more broad knowledge of the history of the era, things that are relevant to today's culture: the split of the middle East, why Israel and Palestine are bitter enemies, how Arch Duke Ferdinand played into the start, etc. Hard to contextualize today's fighting in the Middle East without knowing what catalyzed it.

If one had learned that stuff, then knowing the date should be easy to answer on a test.

I had 2 science classes (7th 8th grade) wit the same grate teecher an i liked them (made a's an b's)... but i didnt take any classes serous after the 4th grade... e.g... as long as i made "C's" life was good.!!!
I guess knowin stuff coud be of more benefit than not knowin stuff;;; for one... you woud have scored beter on the test... lol... but nobody knows it all an everbody needs to look stuff up... some more than others... meh.!!!
