pronunciation (breakfast)

    I pronounce "breafast" as "breck fist", while I pronounce "break fast" as "brake fast". Is this usual, and if so, how did it develop?

    I'm guessing that because it is harder to say "br-ayk-fast" than "br-ek-fast", the vowel sound just naturally slipped over time to give the pronounciation we have today.
