If you want to get historical about it, Sugarhill gang's "Rapper's delight" charted (36 in the U.S. charts & 3 in the U.K.) 2 years before "Rapture" was even written. It was the first Rap record to go gold & is often cited as the record that took Rap/Hip Hop culture from the "underground" to the world. Another of Raps "golden age" artist's also charted a year previous to "Rapture"... Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" - the second Rap record to go Gold. The story goes that Debbie Harry & co were taken to a block Party by Fab 5 Freddy & introduced to all the major players in the scene (check the first line of her *ahem* Rap), they were all so taken with the energy & friendly, family like atmosphere that they decided to have a crack at it themselves.
