Because it is an established median for understanding and quantifying the world around us. Proof is also required in almost all other aspects of our lives as well. get pulled over..proof of insurance. Trial..innocent until proven guilty Buy a car...you need a proof of purchase/registration. :shrug: It just seems that having proof for our claims is an established and effective trend.

Thats why we search for a way to quantify those things using the same system, if we dont know it we dont know it, or we have a theory. That seems like a pretty reasonable way of doing things to me.
