So, there has been an incredible amount of research (linguistic, temporal, scientific, etc.) to analyze the canonical texts of the New Testament. They've looked to validate dates with extra-biblical accounts... They've compared texts in an aim to determine not only when they were written, but which distinct texts shared authors (and which ones had multiple authors).

Has anyone applied similar rigor to the apocryphal texts – especially the ones attributed to the original apostles? I'm particularly, but not solely, interested in the Nag Hammadi scrolls.
