    I think you're confusing railguns with coilguns. My understanding of railgun function is that the Lorentz force is localized around the path of conduction, created by the projectile (or a sabot) as it provides a current path between the rails.

    It is possible to limit the flux density in the conductor by limiting current, of course, but doing so would decrease acceleration and increase the barrel length necessary to achieve a given muzzle energy. The same limitations would apply to a coilgun as well.

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.
