You are utilising faulty logic, you don't know the fact this forum you speak of has no moderation is responsible for how bad it is, you don't know sciforums would be like that if it had less moderation. I could easily find message boards with tonnes of moderation that suck horribly and use them as an example of why sciforums should lighten up on moderation.

I think sciforums is potentially great, but I don't think the moderating has anything to do with that, it's the diversity of the members. A message board dedicated to racism or saying bad stuff is boring because it's frequented by only one kind of person, not because it's not moderated, but because it lacks diversity.
Sciforums has a more varied array of members, that's why it's better, but the moderation at sciforums is only detracting from it's potential diversity.

Lou, I largely agree with your post, except the part about how any problems here are due to moderators.

You do realise he could have meant any site. Why did you automatically jump to the immediate conclusion that it was that site?

Any site really. And I know of at least 3 other forums that are like James described.

you know, i have it on good authority that the admins at the site i mentioned have never had a problem with members complaining about their moderation.

oops...i did hear of one time, but that was like a year ago.

Why would you bother describing such a forum if it weren't somehow related to this one: am I thinking of the same forum you were thinking of? Well, anyways, I visited one such forum last night and was rather surprised to see who goes there and who moderates there — members from this forum! However, I can't for the world understand why they continue to post here when they can have the same conversations over there with the same members that are here... and there. Bizarre to say the least.

That forum there is set up specifically on the principle of survival of the fittest, as a "grand social experiment".
There, members actually have a sense that the quality of the forum depends on them, whereas at a forum like Sciforums, this doesn't seem to be the case.

I like your contributions. Heavily-wrapped with all kinds of goodies inside. Or sometimes: nothing. But, more often than not, a treat.

The memberships of the two forums aren't identical. And the cultures of the two are very different, making for two quite different experiences.
