It was Putin firing missiles at civilian airliners.

I don't know why that video was commented on by a Vatican rep. Maybe they thought it was the Virgin Mary. Who knows..

Here's 20 minutes of numerous flashes and lights in the sky. So whatever this is, it happens in other places as well.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what they thought. Who knows, eh? Maybe the world is populated by fairies who put lights in the sky, Seems as likely as any other explanation, don't you think?

I haven't suggested any of those explanations that you trollishly mention. I think it's an interesting event in it's own right and appears to happen in other places of the world as well. Since you seem so sure about what it isn't, maybe you could enlighten us all about what it is?

Why did you post this in the UFOs, ghosts and monsters section?

What? The sky lighting up at night?

The only hint I get from the news reports is that the Russian authorities are refusing to comment on what it was. That suggests to me that they probably know what it was. And that's not a conspiracy theory, in case you're wondering. I'm guessing that it was probably something military-related. To confirm, it would be interesting to know what military installations are in the area where the event happened.

Of course, this is speculation based on flimsy evidence. But it's a far more likely explanation than this being some kind of supernatural event, or alien visitation, or fairy magic, or a giant light monster, or something else unknown to science.

I live in cleveland ohio and i have seen bright noiseless flashes twice in my life that i remember. Both in the same winter. They were just split second bright as day light flashes, iirc they were both associated with some degree of snow. I assumed it was just some sort of electrical phenomenon. i wasnt looking up when they occured, but they were pretty startling.
Living near lake Erie, weird weather of the electrical storm variety isnt uncommon.

Maybe it was The Cuyahoga bursting into flame. Do you know the Randy Newman song?

It was probably a solar flare that was quick and just had enough energy to make that kind of Aurora happen. Auroras come in red, green and yellow so this looks just like that phenomenon only it didn't last as long.

That's where I post all my unexplained phenomena. Haven't you noticed?

    Yes..

A government would rather keep silent than admit it doesn't know what happened in its own air space. So this is quite typical. It DOESN'T mean they caused the flash.

I agree. There is no reason a govt would admit to not knowing what that mysterious flash was.

Maybe its related to the recently admitted phenomenon of earthquake lights in which geological pressure/stresses induce a piezoelectric discharge in the atmosphere. At least that's one theory...

It's heat lightning. A well known phenomenon.

In a car you would be even more shielded from the sound.

Honestly it is just another meteorite exploding, just like the Chelyabinsk meteorite.

It's really too bright to be just heat lightning. This thing lit up the whole sky!

I think it was probably lightning. MR, you have never seen lightning light up the whole sky at night? Have you ever seen lightning at night?

Not like this. And especially not very distant lightning, the kind of lightning you wouldn't hear thunder from. Besides, if it was lightning from a storm we'd see multiple flashes. This happened only once.

"According to regional television neither meteorologists nor scientists can explain the strange phenomenon.

A local observatory indicated nothing fell from the sky on the day of the flash."====
