    I'll be honest... it doesn't sound like something a person with a healthy psychological self identity would do... he is so desperate for external validation that it is almost sad...

    .It sounds just like the sort of thing that he would and did do. The king (little lord fauntleroy) of sleeze.

    The sad thing is not so much him as the fact that so many are immune to his poison.

    On the other hand his "success" is probably a good indication of the real undercurrent of opinion in the States.

    I doubt he ever tried to pass them off as genuine articles though (at least, I'd hope he didn't)
