Beer, why would you want to come on strangers? (Sorry, it was just too tempting.)
why does this matter ?
Beer, I was talking to river, and it's OK for you to post drunk, as far as I'm concerned. Good morning! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
You mean, about teachers? You must have been drunk. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
True enough. I certainly respected some of my tutors and lecturers, though. Especially my phys chem tutor. You'd have liked his hard drinking*, but as a woman you'd have had to put up with him trying to get you into bed. I have never forgotten his invitation to me to explain the factor 1/3 in the kinetic theory equation for gas pressure: P= 1/3 ρ <c²>. I gave him my 6th form school explanation, after which he nodded and said: "It's very interesting you say that, because it's ballocks, though I would not be surprised to find the same thing in a number of textbooks". He then proceeded to take us through 3 pages of integral calculus to derive the factor rigorously. I was very crestfallen, but the jolt made me realise university science was a lot tougher and more argumentative than school and I would need to raise my game. Also this man, who managed to give riveting and highly mathematical lectures on quantum chemistry - no mean feat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Atkins (I don't like his extreme views on religion though.) But now I find when I go back there the dons do quite respect me, for living a life outside the cosy world of academe. My tutors, all of whom are still alive, have become friends. *After one session he found a back way into Christ Church Cathedral, at 2 a.m., in order to play Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba on the cathedral organ.
I wonder how he would know that. Presumably a small alien artifact would consist of familiar atoms and molecules. There may be some clues in how it was machined/extruded/whatever, but probably not. Establishing that an alien artifact is indeed an alien artifact might be quite difficult.
Lord have mercy, I dreamed about Bach on a proper instrument last night. Synchronicity? Most excellent. May they live, and you, well and hale.
