I gave a talk to a group of Journalism majors at the UofA last week regarding "Honesty in reporting" in the US media.

It had to do with the fact that "like the US presidency," in the field of journalism, there is less and less room for an honest person.

Today, if a young ambitious journalism graduate hopes to get a job in his field with any of the major US media outlets he must "taper" his reporting to what is Politically Correct.

We see this with our "embedded" journalists in Iraq. If they hope to succeed and be recognized for their work they must report what the US public wants to hear, often lies, half truths or complete fabrications and not the truth as they see it in the battlefield.

Recently (April 10, 2004) in Fellajuah, a young UPI reporter, Spencer "Spence" Mulligan (NY University graduate, class of 2002) wrote a piece about seeing two Iraqi's that had had their heads blown off on a road leaving Fallujah and the fact that a tattered white rag tied to a stick in the form of a surrender flag lay next to them, made him think that these two Iraqi's had been accidently killed as they tried to surrender.

Taking his report to the company commander (Col. Leonard Guillispe, USMC) of the unit for "censoring" he was quickly advised to "dump" it. When he asked why he received only a penetrating glare from the colonel that had ordered him to "dump it."

later in the day when he rewrote the report reflecting that "Two Iraqi terrorists had been killed as they prepared to attack US Marines, the report was quickly approved for distribution.

(Thinking back) I remember during Gulf war I, when CNN's Peter Arnett was reporting from downtown Bagdad, he reported that the "Chemical Plant" that had been attacked by US Tomahawk cruise missiles was in fact a baby powder formula producing factory, his bosses at CNN and the US public goaded him. When he reported that an F-17 had dropped a 2,000 lb. into an underground shelter killing over 400 civilians he was sworn at by the Pentagon that insisted that it was an underground Iraqi Command & Control site, the American people demanded that Peter be removed from his post. Can anyone tell me where Peter Arnet is today?

Indeed, Herr Joseph Goebbel's (Hitler's propaganda minister) would be darn right proud of todays US media and all the lies it reports to satisfy the Whitehouse and the Pentagon - and in the end, America's taste for the Aztec-like bloodletting we are seeing in the Middle East c/o our GRAND CHICKEN HAWK George W. Bush and kosher fat pig and mass murderer Ariel Sharon.

    Whirlwind....

you're right about US popular media.
    they are goddamn liars.

but who can blame them? the only way they can get access to tyrannical regimes is by broadcasting the regime's points of view

why do you think we don't see stories about other tragedies around the world? because China, Egypt, Saudi, Syria, NK, etc., would be really upset.

while the embedded journalists during the iraq offensive last year felt "fairly safe" at all times, imagine if they're arrested in Iran for taking pictures of some prison?

as for your "the chem plant was actually a baby-powder factory" line, man, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS?
your anti-US stance would make you believe any theory as long as it's anti-government
