oh! bus bars! then I know what they are.

This is acceptable. Presumably, mods were appointed to their position based on some perceived reputation or expertise (...waits for comments from peanut gallery...), so a reputation system for mods would be SOLELY based on their popularity.

    Ssssssmokin'!

Well, it would certainly be a kiss of death.

    Smokin' hot.

    Shocking behavior.

    Somebody stop me.

    Never mind.

People might deserve a different score depending on the section they were posting in.

I think that the suggestion might be worth a try, just to see what happens.
I wonder whether people would be fair to people with opinions different from their own.

I would. Perhaps other people would too.

Conflicts of interest run both ways

I've wondered about that, too. There are people I disagree with that I would score poorly. But there are also people I disagree with that I wouldn't score at all. And, indeed, there are a few I would score reasonably well.

Among people I agree with? Hell, I'm more likely to not score them at all.

    Good question.
There are some here whose posts I read simply because I'm fairly sure I'll disagree with them: but I'd score them highly for making me think - that's why I read their posts.
On the other hand I disagree so vehemently with others that I would score them negatively, purely because of the disagreement and the (possibly mistaken belief) that someone so wrong-headed can't be worth much.

My suspicion is that it would work better than people fear.

It might change the content of some people's posts in an attempt to higher their reputations, but a fool is soon discovered.
Also, one or two people might try to put you down, but statistics will overcome them.

Buss might be the common usage, but the etymology is surely from the latin 'bus', which is simply something that moves something else? And a busbar moves current?
