What is the difference between les Wé and les wès?

    I think they're just struggling to transcribe the name of an African people in the French alphabet. A hundred years ago they would have called them les Oué. The inconsistency over the plural S is simply an expression of a genuine academic indecision over how to form the plural of the name of a foreign people. We have the same problem in English:
    • The Greeks, the Russians, the Mohawks
    • The French, the Chinese, the Sioux.
