Split Enz included both the Finn brothers. Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House, which from time to time also included Tim Finn.

The Finns are New Zealanders, of course, but all good products of the New Zealand entertainment industry get claimed by Australia sooner or later. Look at Russell Crowe (although not known for his musical ability...)

australia steals kiwis. everyone knows that. soon as a kiwi gets famous, we start calling them aussie.

with the point made about 'how many french cds do you own' - who wants to listen to songs in another language? all you get is noise, its annoying. unless its classical.
  10. codanblad a love of bridges Registered Senior Member

were they eating deep fried chicken and watermelons while he taught them? sure fred could dance, but could he jump?

side note: i'm anglo saxon (baby), where the fuck is my rhythm. hoping this doesn't perpetuate white stereotypes, i do know whites that can dance.

Middle class white boys from the suburbs make the best rock and roll.

America and Britain - and Canada, don't forget - have more of them.

Hard to have a garage band without a garage somewhere in the picture.

Yeah sorry, but no. This is a very evasively politically correct answer, and it's unsurprisingly inadequate.
English speaking artists have no trouble penetrating the global market beyond english speaking countries, and plenty of non-english speaking musicians make it in english speaking countries. It's just that they'll generally be white.

The unavoidable reality is white people and black people dominate music, and most forms of self expression for that matter. Brown and yellow people (orientals, arabs/indians) are quite astonishingly underrepresented. I mean there's room for thousands more big name orientals for it to still be a phenomenon where orientals are bad at music, but there's truely close to none.
Despite there being more of these people than any other, and plenty of them growing up in western countries. Obviously they're innately less adept in this avenue of ability. It's a perfectly feasable possibility, and then it most unambiguously is the case.
"Oh you're just a jerk for not buying records from the great chinese bands" is a cop out crock of shit. There aren't great chinese bands, if there was we would have been forced to take notice.
It only took a pair of russian lesbians to sound mildly catchy for the western world to go temporarily crazy for them. The same would happen IF a half decent song came out of china or india. But they just aren't.
Making music that connects with people isn't a forte of all human populations. White people and negroes are special in this regard. Other peoples are special in other regards.
Asians are great at making money and solving maths problems, but they just don't have that ability to make rumps shake or hearts melt, it's not in them.

Its because the brown, yellow and purple people are more open to other kinds of music and do not rotate in ethnocentric circles. Its also a reason why they can manage more than one language at a time with greater fluency, recognising the inability of all the melanin challenged to be accomplished polyglots.

Bullshit. That's just not true at all. The music white and black people create forces people to notice it all around the world. The idea that there is some indian equivalent of the beetles, or a chinese guy tearing away on an axe like Jimi Hendrix, and we are all just too ignorant to notice, is such a laughably ridiculous assertion it warrants no attention.

And I must say, when James does it he's being a wussy liberal, trying to make indians and orientals feel better about themselves, but when you do it you are being an ignorant racist.
Like a white supremacist saying all the black musicians just copied off elvis, or a black panther saying Shakespeare was a negro.

It is also a technology issue. All the modern popmusic from the 60s needed new inventions and they all came from or was cheaply aviable in the USA and Britain. So that 2 countries got at least a decade headstart.

Now for comparison, Chinese Idol has more viewers then the population of the USA, so I would assume the local stars easily outsell the English singing counterparts...Well, once technology arrives to the last Chinese village...

I find western music wearing after some time, it follows a monotonous tone and rhythm and is predictable. I prefer listening to Ghazals or light Indian classical myself, for its breadth and variety. Its like a MacDonalds burger vs a dosa.

    American? British?

There's East Indian singers in Hindi movies who are known by a billion people.

Who is the world's most recognized athlete?
A couple years ago I recall reading it was the Chinese table tennis champion. True, almost known exclusively by Chinese but 800 million of 1.3 billion Chinese could name him from a photo... 800million was more more than any other athlete...soccer,golf, etc. in recognized by any athlete by the rest of the world.

You're biased. You're a racist indian supremacist. Global trends are much more honest.
There's a body of "great music" that the world has produced and agreed is great, the vast majority of it is western, and not only that, composed/produced/performed primarily by western europeans and to a lesser extent western africans.
You can try to sidestep this reality all you want, it's inescapable. You can try to think up reasons why this is the case which don't hurt the feelings of any ethnic groups, but thorough investigation finds exceptions that prove these to be weak excuses. The only genuine conclusion to be made is that white people and black people are genetically inclined to have the potential to excell in the fields encompassed by self expression.

And are you seriously trying to pretend that you believe this has anything to do with the quality of the music or the table tennis?
If not, why are you so flagrantly deviating off topic, and why do you believe you shouldn't be punished?
  21. S.A.M. uniquely dreadful Valued Senior Member

Yeah, they have better advertising than ghazal singers. According to "global trends" MacDonalds is the best thing to eat out there.

One of the revolutions of our time was the adoption of blind (screened, anonymous) auditions by classical High Art Western orchestras.

Before that, yellow and red and brown and black and female people did not have the innate ability to play such music at that level. After that, innate ability spread out quite a bit.

My prediction is that the development of a large population of middle class teenagers with garages or basements or electrified outbuildings and no immediate pressure to fend off poverty will result, a generation or so later, in the sudden appearance of an innate ability to play rock and roll - or similar - music among whichever culture is involved.

Generally, black people do not listen to, play or appreciate classical music, because they naturally tend towards preferring less controlled, unstructured and more improvised music.

This is why if you listen to all the black music styles, jazz, hip hop, blues etc... there's very little order or regularity in the music. Certainly, there's nothing like the level of control you see in a European orchestra.

Asians do gravitate towards classical music though, and have produced some technically outstanding musicians.
