from aneki.com......check the "more lists" to find this info....

Highest Suicide Rates in the World
Rank Country Suicides per 100,000 inhabitants per year
    1 Lithuania 42.0
    2 Russia 37.4
    3 Belarus 35.0
    4 Latvia 34.3
    5 Estonia 33.2
    6 Hungaryk 32.1
    7 Slovenia 30.9
    8 Ukraine 29.4
    9 Kazakhstan 28.7
    10 Finland 24.3

Europe is light years ahead of the world in terms of technology and employment, but is obviously not as happy a continent as many would think. Why the high suicide rate?? I've never visited any of these countries on the list but can anyone explain what is causing this? Is it the high rates of atheism in many parts of Eastern Europe?

I think somewhere around 85% of Hungarians are religious.

Half of the countries there are ex-soviet and fairly poor. Drinking problems. Hardships of daily life. Very little sunlight north of the Arctic circle in winter.

Just a few problems that spring to mind, but I don't really know.

I'm surprised Japan isn't on that list. I do know that most places in Eastern Europe aren't replacing enough of the population.

I think you are quite right in the assessment. The only 'rich' nation on it is Finland, but it is also suffering from it's geographical position.

The sunlight part really makes me wonder about this question. This might actually be an answer....

Does anyone think the high rates of atheism in Eastern European countries have anything to do with this high rate of suicides? Japan also has a high atheistic population and their suicide rate is very high as well.

Most people in Finland are Christians. Lutherans.

Yea but it's not always related with high standarts, no third world countries on the list

    I don't remember where I read possibly a forum

When I search I come across

    -- I can't post links --

Also I have a Swedish friend complaining about life in Sweden (he says most people complain) and unemployment

I really find it hard to understand. In such developed countries with mere problems

Is it because of their very low levels of diversity as far as race and culture?
It sounds very similiar to the problem asians complain about in china....no room for individuality and a feeling of being "trapped"....

And their society is very homogeneous as well. i can be wrong though

If people are unhappy in Sweden, then the world is truly fucked. Living standards there are perhaps the highest in the world.

I think Europe's problem is the low crime rate. People just kill themselves out of boredom.

You might be right. I'm Turkish, he's now learning Turkish and he wants to work in Istanbul. He thinks that Swedish culture doesn't fit for him and he feels close to Turkish culture. Turkish culture has the diversity you mention, in the middle of Asia and Europe and people with many ethnicities.

Man, he says they could get 100mbit internet! Swedish girls are smoking, safest geopolitical place in the world. It's heaven
