    the moon orbits the sun once every 365 days or thereabouts and rotates 13 times (i think) in that period. the moon would have to orbit the sun every 27 days if it was to keep the same side facing it. and even then that wouldn't work because the moon is locked to the earth not the sun.

    Just to quibble. The Moon is also in orbit around the Sun and has the same attraction to the Sun via gravity as the Earth does. Without the Earth the moon will continue to orbit the Sun.
