What does UAP mean?
UAP stands for "unidentified anomalous phenomena."
It was previously an acronym for "unidentified aerial phenomena," but the Pentagon, NASA, and other organizations tweaked it in December 2022 in order to represent "submerged and trans-medium objects," a defense official said at the time.
The term describes documented events or objects in the sky that cannot be explained naturally. These could be instances not entirely understood on a scientific level, or instances where an aerial object does something in the sky that can't be explained under normal circumstances.
Hundreds of military commercial pilots have reported UAP encounters, often citing video footage, photographs, or sensor readings that supposedly show inexplicable objects.

I wonder what is meant by "submerged and trans-medium objects".

So this means "technological" rather than "environmental" ?

Secret technology, not unknown extraterrestial technology?

Does "transmedium" include extraterrestial space ?

What exactly don't you understand about the word unidentified?

As long as _X_ is "unidentified" it's open to a variety of possibilities. But the preferred assumption is of terrestrial origins (excluding meteors), whether natural or artificial. Wasting investigative resources first on low ranking probabilities isn't practical.

Does "transmedium" include extraterrestial space ?

If something was detected spending time traveling around in aircraft corridors, but then zooming up to outer space, then it arguably becomes applicable.

Currently, the only item coming to mind that might remotely qualify or be mistaken for that -- by an isolated, hillbilly radar facility -- is a spaceplane piggybacking on a large jet plane in the early going.

It was changed by Jay Stratton to help reduce the stigma of the acronym UFO, which most people take to be synonymous with "alien spacecraft". He hoped to make reporting easier for military pilots. There is a long tradition of "report a UFO, lose your job". Originally "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena", it was then change to "Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena" to be more inclusive.
