it dying after it kills you does you a lot of good. You would already be under attack by the time you were able to shoot. I don't know about you but to me it seems like it would be hard to get a shot off while a hippo is trying to kill you.
I sense a challenge. Oli, summon.... the hippo. In all seriousness i think we've wandered off the scenario of being charged. I'm not a hippo aficionado, but unless it were in some sort of hippo-steroid-induced rage, one shot to the head would stave off an attack. And if you haven't noticed, hippo heads are fricking HUGE. I think as it reared up to attack you could shoot into its open mouth and incapacitate, or at least, deter it from further attack. Now unless the hippo sneaks up from behind...
Again.. what does eating meat have to do wuth treating animals like they are automatons ? Not that it has any relevance, but yes I do.
In my case the answer is helplessness. If you get attacked by a huge animals in water(whch is what I fear the most when it comes to animals) there's almost nothing you can do but flail around and hope it leaves you alone. On land there's trees and rocks and other obstacles to flee toward.
