Do we have any experts on firearms here?
I was doing some archaeological field work today and we came across a WWII bullet cartridge - On the bottom it's stamped WRA 1940 308.

Now I've taken this to mean Winchester Repeating Arms (co) and 308 to be the caliber of bullet. However I'm not aware of that bullet being produced before 1952. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Tony Williams should be able to answer your question (or some other poster on that forum).

    He's normally a helpful guy.

It would appear (from here) that the "1940" isn't the date: if it's a date it should be the last two (or last one) digit(s) only...
    The thick plottens.
