    So if you publish a word, online or in paper, that nobody else has published before it is yours legally and your publication alone is proof? You do not have to go to a government office or something and copyright, patent, or register the word first?

    Don't think you can claim a single word as copyright unless registered as a business / trademark type situation

    Any written work is automatically copyright unless sent say to a newspaper for publication

    The newspaper generally reserves the right to edit and if quoted outside of the newspaper generally attributed to said paper

    So it sounds like you cannot copyright a word you create unless the word is copyrighted by a business you own. I now understand that any work you publish is automatically copyrighted to you unless you send it to a newspaper for publication.
