Anything you pen is automatically covered by copyright

Portions can be quoted (I think there is a upper % limit) under "fair usage" provisions

Letters to the newspaper frequently carry a clause of being subject to newspaper editing

Not sure if a single new made up word counts as "published works" however a made up word certainly can be registered as a trade mark

    And a trademark can become a generic term - e.g. band-aid.

Yep - Biro another good example

I don't think companies take action though because it adds publicity to the brand

    Did Biro become Bic?

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballpoint_pen, "Marcel Bich also introduced a ballpoint pen to the American marketplace in the 1950s, licensed from Bíró and based on the Argentine designs. Bich shortened his name to Bic in 1953, becoming the ballpoint brand now recognised globally...."

In the US, once any work is created there is a copyright by the creator but it is much easier, cheaper & certain to prove if it is registered.

Titles, ideas & basic plots cannot be copyrighted. A joke cannot be copyrighted but a collection of jokes can be.

Each published edition of a public domain work is copyrighted. Tho a public domain work is open for use by anyone, any too recent published edition cannot be duplicated without permission.
