    Girls like committment and jewelry.

    1) A promise ring appeases a girl's inherent self-esteem issues by announcing your intent to marry her, before engaging her, so that she can count on continuing to use you to augment her own poor self-esteem for the forseeable future.

    2) It's also shiny, and girls like shiny things.

Us girls just like to feel appreciated once and a while, and we do not use those ring-promises to count on continuing to use the guy for her own poor self-esteem/future. The whole thing behind a guy giving a girl a ring is just that it's making her commit to him and not to any other guys. Therefore, that means something special is there. Glad I could help ya! Chou.

I'd say it has more to do with male insecurity, and the need to have people as possessions. If it were socially acceptable to brand humans, men would do it.

How about a brain next to a monkey?

*comes to the obvious realization that socially acceptable brands are tattoos*

"Company logos can be fashioned into high quality, long lasting corporate gifts."

Dear God! A brander as a gift! With a corporate logo on it!

It's acceptable and done in certain subcultures. Not to mention tattooing and piercing.

Now that's when you know you're a wage slave. I would be worried if I worked for Micro$oft now.

Yes, except that, unlike bowerbirds and crows, women hold grudges.

I have never heard of Promise Rings being associated with males. I have only heard of it from females.

    Thats't right!

    Because:

    1) We don't wanna keep a promise ;-)

    2) The average young guy has less inherent-self-esteem problems
than the average young girl, now this changes over time, the
male may get an early midlife crisis, while most
females get really really sexy when they are 28-35 because it is finally that they feel perfectly content with themselves and in the driverseat.

    3) A ring is also a bit a chain, we like our freedom!!!

    4) Jewellery is elegant, precious and beautifull, characteristics we like to associate with females, a male just looks better in shiny armour than with a pearl necklace

Ok, there are some very confident girls oout there/here that lack no self-esteem at all, but if you look around you , you will find it is very common.

I agree completely! a ring is like a leash: A collar for the hand. Hmmmmmmm branding?

.However a ring also gives the girl some security: things go wrong then she can sell it and get some money which is what all women crave because it is inevitable that they will have kids and so will have to raise them so paid work will be cut short if ever existant.

This is not meant to be nasty or judgemental because the reasons are understood and men are just as guilty of wrong-doing through the perserverance of selfish causes.

    all that and sex

yeah, we've got all those reasons. but a ring is a really good sexual symbol. and of all the reasons above, maybe sex is the best one.

One ring to rule them all,
    One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.

Err.... what? Oh sorry, wrong thread... I think.... hehehe
