looking at the volume and the rough species distribution(suggestion), this is a significant number
possibly equal to many hundreds of kilometers of coast line
my guess is each worm represents around 1/2 to 1 cubic meter of sand

The worms bury themselves deep beneath the sand, but recent storms have uprooted them and Drakes Beach, about 50 miles north of San Francisco, has been covered in the creatures.
