Can ppl on your friend list send you emails?

I don't know whether the site still has this function.
I recall a message being sent to my email address from someone on my sci friends list some time ago, yet when I look around I can't seem to find it.
 
User CP > Edit Options > Receive Email > check/uncheck "Receive Friendship Request Email"
