I'm addressing this to yourself, Mr Vat, because I have the greatest respect for you (and you're not one of the Red Guards I'll allude to below).

Since joining this site just a brief few weeks ago I've watched happen what always happens on sites like this that are predominately directed towards science. That is, anyone who does not -- obediently and unthinkingly -- join in the chorus of songs of praise about science, repeating the same hoary, vacuous mantras of the Ministry of Propaganda (Dawkins et al), is singled out for special treatment by the Red Guards. The bullying then proceeds and is quite merciless, ending only when the dissident has been harassed off the site.

It's already happened to myself, though has diminished somewhat lately, presumably since the Red Guards finally overcame their paranoia and accepted that I wasn't a closet Creationist. Within days of joining, the C-word was thrown in my direction (by exchemist). Since then, I've been called a liar (Pinball), a troll (various Red Guards), accused of being pretentious (sorry about these polysyllables!) and numerous other slights on my character. If anyone objected to any of this, not a voice was heard. Meanwhile, people like Revelation are subjected to a kangaroo court for calling someone a "dumb asshole".

The person Revelation refers to as a dumb asshole gives every indication of being just that. His/her posts are typically devoid of any substantive content whatsoever, consisting mainly of "one-liners" which mock or insult, and on the rare occasions anything substantive is contained, it is so naive as to be painful reading. Any rationally and carefully constructed refutation will simply be ignored, not understood, or reacted to with more insults and ridicule. Revelation surely knows this. Aside from ignoring his tormentor entirely, the only sensible response to an abusive dumb asshole is to call a donkey a donkey; anything else is pointless.

My own view of Revelation for what that's worth, though to repeat I've only been here a short while, is that he's one of the most intelligent posters on the site, certainly far more so than the mindless Red Guards who harass him relentlessly, and a free thinker with valuable insights to offer, whether anyone ultimately accepts his conclusions or not. You don't have to be persuaded! He is thinking; his tormentors are not. I've seen him respond to courtesy with courtesy, and I've seen him respond to contempt with contempt. Why shouldn't he? And there are a lot more of them than there are of him.

I've watched the same treatment dispensed to another member, Trek. All the usual: impugning of his/her honesty, intelligence, and rationality from his tormentors -- and there are always a group of them -- compounded with what are typically abysmally lame arguments, both laden with fallacies and factual inaccuracies.

And what's the reason for all this endless nastiness, bullying, and stupidity from the Red Guards? One word will do: heresy! Heterodox views will not be tolerated here. Heretics are just not "Baird men". Of course, when Trek and Revelation disappear from the site, if they do, the Red Guards will congratulate themselves on their superior powers of ratiocination "We sure showed that dumbass a thing or two about the power of critical thinking!"

What a sham! What kind of a show are you guys putting on here today? Hurt this boy and you'll be Baird bums, the lot of you.



There! Someone had to say it. I may not agree with Trek and Revelation but I will defend their right to say it without fear of intimidation.

P.S. Voltaire never said that. James Cagney never says "You're building a dirty rat ship here" either.

That one fairly recent member is me. This was after Pinball, along with fellow Red Guards (Dave et al) repeatedly impugned my character, and that was after their abject incompetence was exposed. It just will not do around here to correct the "Old Boys" when they announce that 2 + 2 does not equal 4 (Dave), and that the unfalsifiable has been falsified (Pinball).

Ignore all you like; just don't kid yourself as to the reasons. As Revelation correctly notes, you debate at the level of a child and are appallingly misinformed. Same applies to your fellow Red Guards. Isn't ignorance bliss!

Oh, and when an intelligent member like Magical Realist starts a serious and thought provoking thread in the philosophy section ("Plato's Beard") the results are predictable: All our favorite Red Guard donkeys -- evidently experts on everything -- show up to ridicule that which they know precisely nothing about. Everyone is a philosopher after all! Contributions amount to "Twaddle!", "Babble!", "Mental masturbation!" and generally "What a load of bollocks!".

If that does not constitute trolling, I don't know what does.

Presumably this would not be tolerated in the Physics section of the site. After all, physics is serious.

Oops, correction: I thought Revelation's "dumb asshole" was directed at Gawdzilla (to whom it aptly applies).

My apologies to foghorn. Foghorn has made some valuable contributions to my own thread.

Why is "dumb asshole" (Revelation) unacceptable while foghorn's "You’re just a big bag full of windy argument about dead and dusty text" (foghorn) acceptable?

One is a Baird man and the other not?
 
Some folks come in with knives out. Then they try to get the temper of the place while being overtly belligerent/bellicose.

You don't seem to mind when your side does the same. You only see it as decent because you are a part of it. When I say someone is a dumb asshole it means they are currently being a dumb asshole. Sometimes I'm a dumb asshole. When I say people are idiots, I don't exclude myself. The thing about me is that I'm fair.

You have missed some of my posts then. I said I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and show people respect.
You have posted some controversial stuff on COVID and science, expect to receive harsh comments.
You showed some real class on a comment you made about me and that got my respect.
Telling you your comment was not acceptable was to protect you not berate you.
If you do enough insults you will probably get banned, what's the point in that?
You may have important contributions.
It is good for a site to have interesting and different contributions.

I've already commented on all of this. Especially relevant to me is that I have very little to contribute here. It's a science forum with only a tiny bit of interest in religion. I am bored here, and only antagonist, at the least having a pointless ideological discussion out of place.

A bigger pack of hypocrites than the Red Guards of scientism I do not believe I have ever encountered.

Revelation calls someone a dumb asshole -- after being provoked mercilessly -- and the howls of outrage are deafening : "This is unacceptable!! Burn the bastard!!!"

A pack of Red Guards calls myself or some other non-Red Guard a c**t, a liar, and a troll -- without any provocation at all (expect to expose the absurdity of their assertions) -- and not a word of protest is to be heard. Indeed, the hypocrite quoted above leads the pack.

What a sham!
 
There is a consolation in that the couple of weirdos preening themselves now are still to be preferred to the thankfully shelved dispute that preoccupied the site over this past year or longer until one of the mods was cast out from the admin heavens.

I am betting these two bumpkins will burn out in due course .A shame they cannot really be called entertaining.

We can now add "weirdo" and "bumpkin" to the list of insults.

Bumpkin or not, I'm not the fella going around proving that 2 + 2 does not equal 4, or that the unfalsifiable has been falsified, and in general, exhibiting a degree of ignorance and confusion which simply beggars belief.

Evidently no one objects to the propagation of claims which are patently absurd, just so long as the claimants are wearing the right color of shirt. Equally evidently, pointing out these absurdities is hazardous to health around here -- the slander and defamation commences immediately.

What a sham!
 
Oh well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I shall now provide additional proof to an already sizeable body of evidence accumulated by our resident Red Guards that 2 + 2 does not necessarily equal 4.

(It had earlier been demonstrated by one Red Guard that 2 + 2 = 11 [in base 3] disproves the claim that 2 + 2 necessarily equals 4)

Here's the latest proof:

2 + 2 = quatre [in French]


Look! 2 + 2 does not add up to 4 !!!

Now when does this bumpkin get his shiny new red uniform? Can't wait to start crucifying people who make sense on this site. Yay!
