My MacBook has been acting stupid in the last couple weeks as regards the DVD/CD drive. Several DVDs have just been freezing, especially within the first couple minutes. It then says the DVD Player program (not sure of the exact name, it comes with the OS I'm assuming) has encountered a problem and needs to close. The DVDs were basically in good to pristine condition, so I doubt it's any physical defects in the discs.

Does anyone know of any way to determine what is wrong? I have never used any other DVD program but the one that came loaded on the computer. I think I tried a different video program, but wasn't sure how to load the individual DVD files. I remember that it did something, but not sure it was designed to load them that way.

It's a 2006 MacBook. Original OS other than maybe one or two minor updates (10.4 or so).

Thing is, I haven't really used the DVD or CDRom drive much at all over the last 3 years since I got it new. I'm having difficulty thinking the drive could be dying already since I probably use it an average of a few hours a month.

Any suggestions? Is there any diagnostic program(s) that could test its performance?

Bye!

You shouldn't ask such stupid questions! Giambattista, you're a charlatan, like Clementi, and other fake Italians.

Why don't you figure it out yourself. I'll cut you up... :shake:

Holding down F2 didn't seem to do nothin. Different OS? I'll look for an equivalent.

I haven't tried a cd. It just started acting funny a few weeks ago. It was all good and well before that. Generally only use DVDs. I guess an external drive would be one option. Or just replacing the internal one.

Is it anyone's opinion that Mac's have been more shoddy in the last couple years? Cutting corners and the like?

the macbook pro is very good and the dvd they use is probably a standard based off of sony or pioneer drive, maybe it is under warrante. tbh, you are always better off using an external dvd player, just plug it in and it works. you can try a demo of ultimate dvd player for mac too but i doubt it is a software problem.

O K A Y ....

The "F2" article seemed to be about newer Macs, so I missed a few fine prints. "d" for my version of MacBook (06) will only work with the install discs.. Ooops! I'll have to go on an expedition, now.
