Genesis, one of the best bands ever, here's why

Loyal rock fans and proggers alike, I've come to explain the reasons that make Genesis one of the best rock bands of all time.

First off, the band was formed with excellent musicians, such as Anthony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Michael Rutherford, Anthony Phillps, Steven Hackett, Phillp Collins. Including the tour musicians, Bill Bruford, Chester Thompson, Daryl Strumer. Each band member were very technical in their way of playing.

Peter Gabriel: unique voice and writing, flute added extra effect in most numbers that featured the flute, very theaterical

Anthony Banks: classically trained pianist, excellent writer

Michael Rutherford: great contributing band member, excellent rhythm guitarist

Anthony Phillps: unique hard-rock "Zeppelin-like" guitar style (not much can be said about Anthony since he was in Genesis from 1967-1970)

Steve Hackett: very unique guitar style, in terms of his idea of "atomsphere" and environment

Phil Collins: extremely excellent drummer, jazz and blues background, plus musical background

Genesis was very progressive in their own right, they went from being a cult band, setting standards, to a pop band that wrote the standard pop song structure ABACAB. But in the music was something spectacular, the unique feel of their music.

Of course, Genesis has the best rock opera of any band. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, most arguably, the standard for all rock operas. It has rivaled Tommy since it was first released, but unfortunately, Genesis just did not have the promotional wagon. Pink Floyd's The Wall doesn't even come close, since it is too easy to figure out the story line, it also fails to capture the imagination, due to its gloominess and easy relation to live. Dark Side of the Moon is still something that is rivaled with Selling England By The Pound. There are many comprehensions to this unique and uttering creative masterpiece.

This is the best annotation of the Lamb I have found:

Recommended for all who love The Who, Pink Floyd, Yes, and King Crimson; including Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, and Mike & The Mechanics fans. Not to forget the neo-prog bands: Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, Magellan, Ayreon, and many more.

Well, enjoy, post as many arguments as you all like. It would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

The wall is pink floyds worst album ;).

Someday though, I will check it out. Right now, I am looking at getting my first ever king crimson CD.

If it is the best rock opera, then why would it rival Tommy? It would have surpassed it.
You really think it's better than Tommy and Bat out of Hell?

While Gabriel was still the front man, yes.

Court of the Crimson King is their best release by far.

My dad likes Genesis. I listened to one cd. It didn't impress me, sounded a little weak. But I'll take a look again.

I meant it is one of the best rock operas, it rivals Tommy.

List o' rock operas:

1. Genesis - The Lamb Dies On Broadway
2. Marillion - Brave
3. The Who - Tommy
4. Spock's Beard - Snow
5. Ayreon - The Human Equation
6. The Who - Quadrophenia
7. Magellan - The Great Goodnight
8. Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory
9. Neal Morse - Testimony
10. Pink Floyd - The Wall

This is just my ranking of my favorite rock operas, this is excluding "concept" albums. (ie. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon)

No Meatloaf??

haven't really listened to the first Bat Out Of Hell, heard parts of Part II, no doubt it's good. Meatloaf is pretty good, especially with the family on a sunday evening lol. all joking aside, meatloaf is a great band.
